91 young prisoners moved from Indy to Madison
MADISON The state moved 91 juvenile prisoners — all girls — from Indianapolis to the new Madison Juvenile Correctional Facility in Jefferson County on Tuesday as part of a larger plan to restructure Indiana prisons and relieve overcrowding.
The new juvenile center sits on the grounds of the Madison State Hospital, which serves Hoosiers with mental illnesses, and the Madison Correctional Facility, which houses female inmates. At the new facility, 117 staff members, some from the former Indianapolis Juvenile Correctional Facility, will oversee the 91 inmates.
The state renovated and used some buildings that had been part of the hospital for the new juvenile center, which is part of the Indiana Department of Correction’s effort to make space for almost 2,100 new prison beds. The effort also aims to address the projected growth in the number of female offenders and save the state nearly $200 million.
Later this month, the state will begin moving adults from the Indiana Women’s Prison to the grounds of the former Indianapolis Juvenile Correctional Facility.
