Under wraps: Belts, collars, buttons shine

Buying a winter coat is one of the high points of the shopping year.

For the upcoming winter, coats are still structured, but feature fewer architectural details.

You’ll still see ruffles and skirted coats, but this year’s more popular options are belts, big collars and buttons. Wool is very in, as is quilting (think long puffers).

If you want to have a flash of color on a cold winter day, rich jewel tones are available in wool and puffer forms. The best news is that all trends can be found for a reasonable price tag — here are some of our favorites for less than $300.

J. Crew’s long, belted puffer (in spiced wine) incorporates the quilted trend and the deep jewel-tone color (you can also get it in darker shades). At $235, you’ll be able to continue shopping for other winter wear.

We recently called to your attention some fun faux fur pieces, but we didn’t have space to mention the Lucky Brand Leopard Faux Fur Coat, available from Nordstrom for $199.

Jessica Simpson might be traveling the world filming “The Price of Beauty,” but she left a lovely winter coat for us. A Belted Melton coat is a gorgeous red — with a big collar — and encapsulates many trends in a wool blend. You’ll find it for $178 (regular $275) at Macy’s.

H&M always has good deals, and its coats are no exception. The racks at the Castleton location are full of big-collar, wool-blend coats in a variety of textures and silhouettes. We love the simple, black wool blend with jersey knit accents and a large collar, $79.99.

Samuel Dong’s belted, quilted coat is a little lighter, so you’ll want to layer under it, but the wide belt accents the waist for a chic silhouette. Find it at Secret Ingredient for $168.
