Herbs provide sage advice for grooming products

Long before we had huge cosmetics companies producing grooming products, humans had to rely on unprocessed herbs to clean up nicely.

But even now that we can go completely away from nature to get a clean person, cosmetics companies are busily incorporating some time-tested herbs into their lines.

I decided to look for the herbs from “Scarborough Fair” (with a few added plants) and see where you can buy them — not for the kitchen, but for your hair and skin.

Parsley: You might think of parsley as just a garnish, but the truth is this herb is known for its digestive properties, including relieving bloat. Parsley extract shows up in Burt’s Bees Natural Acne Solutions Targeted Spot Treatment ($10) — in the treatment, parsley reduces redness and swelling — and the product is an all-natural acne-fighter.

Sage: The silvery leaves of sage have long been used to reduce swelling. Carol’s Daughter incorporates the herb into foot products, such as the Rosemary&Sage Herbal Foot Bath, a combination of dry herbs, coarse salt and orange peel that revives and relaxes tired and achy feet; and the Sage&Shea Foot Butter with rosemary and sage to relax tired feet. Visit www.carolsdaughter .com or call (877) 540-2101 for more information.

Rosemary: Used on hair, rosemary can darken (or tone) dark hair. Lisa Hoffman Day Toner ($18) is an alcohol-free toner that contains rosemary leaf oil for healthy circulation. Find it at www.lisa hoffman skincare .com.

Thyme: With its strong scent, it’s no wonder the Greeks burned thyme for courage. You’ll find thyme extract in Listerine in the form of thymol. Korres Thyme Honey moisturizing mask cleans the skin while helping it retain moisture. Find it at www.drugstore .com for $27.

Basil: Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day basil line is an easy favorite. Try kitchen cleaners, scent diffusers, laundry detergent and hand soap. Visit www.mrsmeyers .com.

Lavender: This delicately scented herb is one of the most popular ingredients for natural lines.

You can find it in the Miss Oops Pedicure in a Bottle, which also contains peppermint, menthol and tea tree oils ($18 for 4.5 ounces) which soothe and cool feet. Keep the lavender scent around as you sleep — and you’ll sleep easier when the herb is combined with chamomile in the Bath&Bodyworks Aromatherapy collection Pillow Mist and Dream Bath, available at Bath&Bodyworks or www.bathandbody works.com.

John Frieda refreshes blonde shades with the company’s Color Renew and Tone Restoring shampoo and conditioner with lavender extract ($8.99).

Vanilla: Derived from flowering orchids of warmer climes, vanilla is soft and sweet to the smell. Lavanila’s Vanilla Lavender collection blends Spanish Lavender, Rose Absolute, Violet Leaf and warm Madagascar Vanilla for its scent; the line is free of petrochemicals, phthalates, propylene glycol, mineral oils, silicones, synthetic dyes, sulfates and parabens. Choose from the Healthy Fragrance perfume ($56), Healthy Body Butter ($25), Healthy Body Wash ($20) and Healthy Candle ($32). All are available at Sephora and Lavanila.com.

Mint: Upper Canada Soap’s Naturally Collections Wild Mint Lime line is a zesty way to get clean. The line includes body butter ($12), coarse salt scrub ($15), lip butter ($7), Vita-Body Spray ($8), hand lotion ($12), massage oil ($10), bath milk ($3), shower gel ($8) and Whipped Hand Repair Balm ($8).
