1. Indy Pride Parade and Festival
Parade starts at 10 a.m. June 14; festival follows from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m at University Park, free, www.indyprideinc.com
Scrunch up your eyes when you attend IndyPride's parade on Mass Ave. -- the party on wheels culminating Pride Week -- and you might fool yourself into thinking you are in San Francisco. Open your eyes wide and, beyond the drag queens throwing beads, you'll see that Indianapolis has a thriving LGBT community. It also has a lot of straight people committed to tolerance, diversity and serious dancing.
2. 'Some Men'
7 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays except July 4, when there will be no show, 8 p.m. Saturdays and 2 p.m. July 6; Phoenix Theatre, 749 N. Park Ave.; $15 to $25; www.phoenixtheatre.org
Many Americans began hearing about the gay community in the 20th century, and playwright Terrence McNally has written a lot about gay men during that time. His play "Some Men" focuses on gay male relationships from the Harlem Renaissance to the Stonewall riots to the online dating scene. Bryan Fonseca directs a cast that includes J..Blakemore, Matt Goodrich, Scot Greenwell, Greg Howard, Jon Lindley, Ricardo Melendez, Kurt Owens, Dave Ruark and Bill Simmons.
3. Talbot Street Art Fair
10 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 14, 10.a.m. to 5 p.m. June 15, free, Talbott Street (between 16th and 19th streets), www.talbotstreet.org
Your grandfather might have attended the first Talbot Street Art Fair in 1957, when Herron Art School students tried to show off (and just maybe sell) some of their works. Today, it's one of the biggest neighborhood art fairs in the country, with more than 250 artists coming to Indianapolis from across North America to show off (and sell) some of their works.
4. "It's Better If Gabriela Doesn't Die"
9 p.m. June 12, free (donations welcome), Mass Ave Video's Media Garden, 922 Massachusetts Ave., www.indyfilmfest.org
Catch an under-the-stars showing of the audience's favorite movie from the recent Indianapolis International Film Festival. "It's Better if Gabriela Doesn't Die" is a satirical send-up of Mexican soap operas and the blurry line separating fiction from celebrity-obsessed reality. Get to Mass Ave Video's Media Garden when it opens at 8:15 p.m., not just to reserve the best lawn chair, but because Mass Ave Wine Shop is offering a free tasting.
5. Get Indy-Volved!
6 to 8 p.m. June 18, free, The Children's Museum, 3000 N. Meridian St., www.indyhub.org
Ever wanted to wander through the Children's Museum when it is uncluttered by children? Maybe explore exciting new uses for caramel and alcohol while strolling through the Dinosphere? IndyHub is bringing together the best grad schools and local social and civic organizations to show young professionals what Indy has to offer. Combine relaxed networking with free hors d'oeuvres and complementary "turtletinis."
Talbot Street Art Fair was great as usual. The weather was amazing early Sunday morning and the crowds weren't too bad at that time. Sometimes I forget how big the fair is until I walk through it all. In my opinion, this is much better than Penrod.
