With gas costs burning up our life savings and people being laid off left and right (myself included)- what can you do to maintain normalcy in Indy without turning to Spam, mac-n-cheese, cancelling travel plans and the internet subscription?!
How are you saving, got any tips? Any awesome stories? Cheap gas locations? Crazy marketing strategies that you've seen trying to get you to buy stuff so a company doesn't lose everything.
My only answer so far is a rewards credit card for a gas station that earns me money to go back towards gas :-)
From there, mac-n-cheese is pretty darn tasty.
I guess spending more time on indy.com?
Some people DO hang out on indy.com AS their job (see staff) :-) I guess I can't cancel my internet service or I'd lose my Precious.
Mac and cheese + Internet = all you need
Cook more noodles, ride my bike, drink at home, walk more (not doing good at this one).
I heard spams makin' a big comeback too.
Walking more (which is really starting to get annoying with this weather...), turning everything off when I'm out for the day, and cooking for myself a lot more (...basically means anything that can go in a microwave or is pasta).
Invest in a scooter for those that do not wish to walk. Microwaveable popcorn.....Netflix.
The library. There is a small initial investment, but then it's endless entertainment for free. I'd also recommend that you alternate great quantities of spaghetti with the mac and cheese. And Ramen can be ok if you tart it up properly. It's still possible to eat for next to nothing as long as you don't do it outside your home.
Awesome, will do! Noodle, walking, and basically doing the things we could do any other day of the week but choose not to when we can afford it. The crazy Internets keeps me sane and it's my bet investment at $23.99/mo. Is the Italian Fest this weekend free? I might have to hit up some fancy noodles!

No admission to the Holy Rosary Italian Street Festival this Friday and Saturday, and there's free parking in the Lilly lots.
There's also no admission to the Talbott Street Art Fair this Saturday and Sunday.
These are a couple a great events.

Definitely checking them out! I love art fair and festival season! Thanks a bunch Jolene!
We've begun to unplug our electronics - dvd, tv, amp, cd player - at all times except when we use them.
I'm personally trying shorter showers to conserve water.
Cant seem to do much with eating lunch out (I do meetings at lunch) or visiting the tea/coffee shop. Those have social elements that are vital to my sanity.
Drinking at home has saved me a ton of money.
Shop your local farmer's market.
donate plasma, you get some cash, and you can meet some really interesting people
I meant SELL the plasma, damn I screwed up again

I'm not ready to part with my TV to pay for gas! ;-)

Got any favorites? Know dates and length of run? I LOVE buying local and talking to the farmers.
We are partial to the Broad Ripple Farmer's Market at Broad Ripple High School. It kept us supplied with tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers all last summer. It is on Saturdays from 8-noon. We also blogged about the Binford Farmers Market a couple of weeks ago. It was our first visit there and we were impressed. That is on the corner of E. 62nd and Binford on Saturdays from 8-noon. Traders Point is nice and you can have dinner while you are there on Fridays from 4PM-8PM.There are tons more of course, Carmel, Fishers, City Market...
Thanks a ton WYA! Can't wait to check them out!
So many good ideas!! :)
Grow your own..veggies etc.
