Just got back from Acadia National Park
When we went there: Late August through early September. The weather was perfect.
We went there because: My husband and I travel to at least one national park each year. He has family in Camden, Maine, which is about 70 miles from Acadia National Park.
How we got there: We flew from Indianapolis to Portland, Maine, and then rented a car for the drive to Camden. After a short visit with family, we drove on to Mount Desert Island, where Acadia National Park is located.
Where we stayed: A small hotel in Bar Harbor, just outside the main park entrance.
Most interesting experience: One cloudless evening just before sunset, we drove to the top of the highest mountain in the park, Cadillac Mountain. We watched the sun set while the full moon was rising. It was an incredible sight.
Best food we ate: Lobster is a must if you are in Maine.
Favorite memory: Taking a challenging hike to the top of a small mountain called the Beehive. It’s quite steep in spots, and a small part of the trail is extremely narrow along a cliff wall. But the climb was worth every scary minute because the view of the landscape, the harbor dotted with small islands, and the ocean below was stunning! The trip down the other side was much easier; our hike ended at a pristine, crystal-clear lake named The Bowl.
Must-have souvenir: Visitors are not allowed to take anything from the park. But the photo opportunities are endless.
