The Top 10 Live is a collaborative effort between Indy.com and Indianapolismusic.net.

1. Loretta CD release/farewell show with Red Light Driver & Miranda Sound

9 p.m. June 6, $7, Birdy's, 2131 E. 71st St., (317) 254-8971

Neil Young noted, "It's better to burn out/than to fade away." Rock act Loretta has chosen to do neither, but to gracefully cap off its run as one of Indy's favorite bands. On this night, you'll hear three brothers and their best friend perform their emotionally powered rock one last time and celebrate the release of their final CD.

2. The Avett Brothers w/ The Everybodyfields

9 p.m. June 6, $18, The Vogue, 6259 N. College Ave., (317) 259-7029.

The Avett Brothers introduced themselves to Indy at the 2005 Midwest Music Summit, where they instantly won fans. Their music blends the front-porch stomp of Carolina mountain music with modern-life lyrics.

3. Nada Surf & The Republic Tigers

8:30 p.m. June 9, $15. Music Mill, 3720 E 82nd St., (317) 841-1850

Nada Surf is labeled as "indie rock legends" in some circles, though the road to that status wasn't easy. After releasing a hit single and achieving early success with a major label debut, the band found itself back on the indie road with its second record. Unfazed, the group re-established itself with a steady stream of power pop releases and regular touring.

4. James McMurtry

8 p.m. June 9, $15, Birdy's, 2131 E. 71st St., (317) 254-8971

The procession of Texas-based singer/songwriters passing through Indiana continues this week. The son of novelist Larry McMurtry, James McMurtry got an early hand from John Mellencamp, who produced his debut album, 1989's "Too Long in the Wasteland." Since then, McMurtry has released eight studio records, including 2008's "Just Us Kids."

5. She Wants Revenge w/ Be Your Own Pet, The Virgins, Switches

8 p.m. June 10, $16, The Vogue, 6259 N. College Ave., (317) 259-7029

It doesn't seem like all that long ago when She Wants Revenge was a buzz act with a newly released debut, playing a show at The Melody Inn. This time around, the band is headlining at Indy's best-known live music club. Their dark, goth-inspired rock is compared to such bands as Bauhaus and Joy Division.

6. Punk Rock Prom, featuring Creepin' Charlie & the Boneyard Orchestra, The Lions Rampant, The Dockers & Lockstep

10 p.m. June 7, $7, The Melody Inn, 3826 N. Illinois St., (317) 923-4707

It's that time of year again. Time for the punk rockers to spike up their Mohawks, put on their best leather jackets and cleanest Chuck Taylors, and get ready for the annual Punk Rock Prom. Don't worry if you don't fit the mold -- this prom is open to anyone looking for a good time.

7. Chuck Prophet w/ Tim Grimm

9 p.m. June 5, $10, Radio Radio, 1119 E. Prospect. St. (317) 955-0995

Call it Americana, roots rock, alt-country, or whatever you like. If you count any of those styles among your favorites, put this show on your calendar. Chuck Prophet has been putting out critically acclaimed alt-country records since 1990. Along the way he's collaborated with such artists as Warren Zevon, Aimee Mann and Jonathan Richman.

8. The Dirty Dozen Brass Band

8:30 p.m. June 10, $12, Music Mill, 3720 E. 82nd St., (317) 841-1850

Like most New Orleans musicians from New Orleans, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band was highly affected by the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Their musical response was their 2006 album "What's Going On," a reinterpretation of Marvin Gaye's classic 1971 protest album. This show promises to deliver the traditional brass band marches that have made the Dirty Dozen one of the leaders of New Orleans' music heritage.

9. Garrison Starr & Rachael Sage

8 p.m. June 6, $13, Indy Hostel, 4903 Winthrop Ave., www.indyhostel.us

Near Broad Ripple, the Indy Hostel serves its visitors in many ways. Along with providing accommodations for overnight guests, the Hostel also exhibits the work of local artists and offers up one of Indy's most intimate venues for singer/songwriters. This week Garrison Starr visits from Nashville, Tenn., with Rachael Sage opening. Reviewers have compared Starr's work to such artists as Sarah McLachlan and Neko Case.

10. Remembering Jack Gilfoy

3 p.m. June 8, free, Jazz Kitchen, 5377 N. College Ave., (317) 253-4900

Jack Gilfoy made his mark on Indianapolis' musical culture in many ways. As a performer, he drummed behind top-name jazz, pop, classical and country artists. As an educator, he directed the Jazz & Music Business Studies program at IUPUI and was a drum teacher. His May 2 death left a hole in Indy's music community. This event includes a musical tribute to Gilfoy headed by Brent Wallarab and Mark Buselli.
