the market is getting a little stagnant out there for new tvs. as prices have remained solid(ish) for over a year now, its come time to think about making the jump away from the ole' tube tv and get a flatty.

i know there are differences between lcd and plasma models, the biggest being that once you get over 50" plasmas are the only affordable choice, but i aslo dont think the words "50" tv" and "affordable" make sense. plasmas are also better for watching films in darker rooms and lcds are better for gaming in bright rooms. regular tv doesnt really matter, but over time "burn ins" are more probable with either.... HD is the future and is going to be a constant, right?

what do you guys have? what do you wish you would have bought if you hadnt decided on what you DID get? any long term troubles? and finally, how much cheaper is your tv today than it was a year ago?

maybe i should just wait.... right?

I have a 67" Samsung 1080p DLP that I bought 2 days before the Colts went to the Super Bowl a couple of years ago. I have absolutely nothing but high praise for this TV. It takes everything I throw at it (HD-DVD, Blu Ray, Xbox 360, Custom Built Media PC) and hasn't given me an ounce of trouble. The picture is bright and crystal clear. I haven't even had to replace a bulb yet (knocks on wood). No regrets whatsoever. I can't really compare it to current prices, because mine was discontinued in favor of a newer model with LED bulbs and the capability to do 3-D (with additional hardware and software) similar to IMAX.

I have the 50" Samsung LED DLP model you mentioned...it's solid, but nothing seems to look as good as those new 120hz LCD's. Those look like the person is really in the screen...real clear and vivid picture. My model is supposed to be 120hz....but I've never got it to display over 60hz. And the 3-D technology is too complicated to use.

But I'd always go with LCD over plasma, from what I've heard plasma life is short and there is not much fixing once it goes down. More expensive, but better quality.

I've owned a modest 37" Toshiba LCD for a little over a year now and I have absolutely no regrets. The picture is phenomenal and the resolution of the images is unparalleled. Prices have dipped slightly, yet not significantly enough to sway one's decision either way in my opinion. The LCDs do in fact have a longer lifespan and they are NOT at risk of experiencing screen burn in as opposed to the plasma which is. Buy an LCD. I'm not sure I would recommend rear projection as replacing the bulb at some point is inevitable. However, the picture remains flawless with either. Check out Toshiba's lineup. The RegZa technology they use in manufacturing their equipment is quite impressive.

Cheers!

I have one of each, LCD and Plasma. I have a 50 inch plasma, but I can't really comment on the price issue, because it was free(thank you indy.com). As far as the quality goes, it's KILLER. It has three different viewing settings, so if you are watching it in a brighter room, you can adjust the screen for daytime viewing, where the colors are brighter, compared to in a dark room, where you can adjust to normal or even night time. I would think this cuts down on the wear and tear of having the TV on.

I also have a 37 inch LCD. To be honest, I can't really even tell the difference in picture quality. It seems that in the newer TV's, plasma or LCD, HD is HD. I don't get too much into it though. I just know they both look great, and that's all I care about. I don't get into, "how green is the grass, or the shadows and all of that jazz. I used to have a 46 inch projection HD Samsung, they both beat the crap out of that, and the HD quality in that was really good too.

I'll agree though, I've seen a few DLP tv's and their picture quality is phenomenal! If you have the room for one, they are great.

The LCD might out last the Plasma, but in my opinion, when your plasma tv actually goes out, there will be something bigger and better out and you'll want it anyway. If it goes out shortly after you purchase it, they the warranty will cover it, so you are good all around, but that's just my thinking.

projection tvs are way out of my future - replacement bulbs (inevitable) are soooooo expensive and i dont see myself moving into a home that 1)has space enough, 2) a large piece of electronics would look good in.

i guess i should really just go to stores with lowered lighting (hh gregs, fryes) and give em a good staring at.
