I got this generic email today. This is the first I've heard of this. Anyone know if it's real or not? My guess would be no, but you never know???

This is the email.

House Bill State of Indiana

Citations Affected: IC-9-13-2; IC 9-21-22.

Synopsis: Hand held mobile telephone use. Makes it a Class D infraction to operate a motor vehicle while using a hand held mobile telephone. Exempts: (1) a person who uses a mobile telephone in an emergency situation; (2) the operator of an authorized emergency vehicle; (3) the operator of a medical services vehicle; and (4) a volunteer firefighter or certain emergency services professionals en route to the scene of an emergency.

Effective: July 1, 2008.

Yup, that's right, we can no longer drive and talk on our cell phones starting next month…be careful!!

I looked briefly at the Indiana Code referenced in the email and couldn't find anything with that language. It's possible that the website hasn't been updated, but it seems like we would have heard more about this. This is probably part of a bill that didn't make it through the legislature.

That is what i figured. Most emails I get like this are bogus, but I thought I would check on this one. The last thing I need in a freakin ticket for talking on the phone while driving, when I'm still driving 90% better than everyone else around me.

It is a law in other states. For instance, the state of Michigan does consider it to be a class D infraction. Its just a matter of time before it happens here in Indiana.

New York has this law. That's why my sister got a bluetooth ages ago

Haha, I agree. It's pretty stupid to do but I've definitely done it. Most people really don't need distractions like that.

Bluetooth is for goons who think they're important...no way in hell I'm rocking them goofy ass earpieces....I'm not a fuggin robot! I'll just use speaker phone and hold it in my lap so the cops don't see.

LOL! You mean it's not a new fashion statement? Could have fooled me! Love the people who rock a blue tooth when they aren't even on the phone.

An all new level of coolness, if you ask me... jk

I completely agree. Whenever I see a person proudly wearing their blue tooth although they haven't received a phone call all day it automatically conjures images of star trek figurines, bermuda shorts, and sandals.

=)

Bluetooth isn't a valid workaround for the whole cell phone + driving thing anyway! It's not the 'holding the phone to your ear' part that makes people bad drivers. It's the 'listening/comprehending/responding while also making (or not making, in many cases) critical analyses and reacting in a timely manner' that really gets people. But hey...if you're using Bluetooth, at least you'll have both hands on the wheel when you crash?!

But using that logic...we shouldn't talk to people who are in the car while we drive either?

I think it's more of the blind spot you have when you have a phone to your ear...combined with the fact that most people can't drive for crap anyway. With or without the phone, it's probably going to be a wreck because the person can't drive, the phone just gets the blame.

In an effort to predict the next wave of tech fashion, I will now be designing a laptop harness. Much like the bluetooth earpiece, the laptop harness will allow users to have constant access to their computers. I envision a black leather holster (think cell phone belt clip) that would place the laptop approximately waist high in front of the user. Future add ons would include the shoulder mounted fax machine/scanner among others. Of course, only cool people will have these accessories.

well considering i am constantly getting lost, (not very good with directions) i need my phone. i cant count how many times i have had to call a friend and say help me get home im lost and stayed on the phone until they guided me to their house or to somewhere i knew so i could get home. and being lost in bad areas being single and a woman (blonde at that) you damn straight i want to be able to use my cell if something happens, or just to let someone know where i am. i can understand about texting and driving, thats hard too do and distracting, but not talking on the phone and driving.

It is hard for the human brain to concentrate on two things at one. If you're talking on the phone, you're only half paying attention to the road.

Indiana has been considering a cell phone ban for a while and I believe legislation has come up for vote in the past. I'm not sure if any of it has passed or not. It's usually a county by county decision though, so it would be local ordinances most likely.
