Lots of new Margot music on the way
It's complicated, but there's news regarding new music from Margot & the Nuclear So and So's.
First item of business: "Animal!" -- the Indianapolis-based band's debut for major-label Epic Records -- will not be released on July 29, as originally scheduled.
The consolation prize will be a live mini-album released that day via Epic. Titled the "Daytrotter EP," the recording was made in Rock Island, Ill., for music Web site Daytrotter.com.
Available in CD and digital formats, "Daytrotter EP" will include the songs "Broad Ripple is Burning" (previously available only on a vinyl single), "Bookworm" (from 2005 debut album "The Dust of Retreat") and the unreleased "My Baby (Shoots Her Mouth Off)," "Love Song for a Schubas Bartender" and "I am a Lighting Rod."
Things get trickier on Oct. 7, when albums titled "Animal!" and "Not Animal" will be released via Epic.
"Animal!" is the 12-song project the band submitted to executives at Epic. It wasn't warmly received at the label, but it wasn't rejected, either.
Fans will be able to purchase "Animal!" in vinyl and digital formats.
Epic's favorite songs from Margot's recording sessions with producer Brian Deck will be found on "Not Animal," a 12-song collection sold in CD and digital formats.
Five of the same songs appear on "Animal!" and "Not Animal" -- meaning a total of 19 new studio tracks will be released in October.
Guitarist Andy Fry says he's pleased "Animal!" will survive as a complete artistic statement, and he's OK with the plans for "Not Animal."
"I like all the songs we did," Fry says.
While Epic appears to be positioned to promote "Not Animal" to the masses, the album's title inherently directs attention to the other release.
This subtle marketing ploy may point to a rosier relationship between the musicians and the label in the future.
"I think (Epic) will give it a chance," Fry says. "What else could we want?"
I don't understand why they would put 5 of the same tracks on different albums and then make an EP. Why not just kill the EP idea and add those tracks to "Not Animal"? Oh well...I'm excited to hear some new stuff.

New York, NY - Epic Records artists Margot and the Nuclear So & Sos have completed two sophomore albums simultaneously. On October 7th, 2008 Animal! will be released on vinyl. On the same day, the band will release a second album digitally and via CD called Not Animal, since the label and band could not agree on which of the17 songs recorded for the album should be released, they mutually decided to have 2 versions of the record. Both records will contain 12 original tracks. Only 5 of the songs will be found on both records
Margot and the Nuclear So & Sos is an 8-piece circle of young ruffians who, in the spring of 2005, quietly released one of the most beloved records in recent memory, The Dust of Retreat. For both Animal ! and Not Animal, the band recently finished working with producer, Brian Deck (Iron & Wine, Modest Mouse, Califone) to create yet another wonder, their next rollercoaster ride of restraint and release.
To the delight of fans, in advance of the coming new album, Margot will release the Daytrotter EP on July 29th, 2008. Daytrotter (www.daytrotter.com) is an online music site which features exclusive live performances from over 300 major and indie artists -- all recorded direct to analog tape -- in their studio in Rock Island, IL. Margot will be the first band to formally release the songs from their session, which features an all-star track list of new material along with Dust of Retreat favorite, "Bookworm". Most often described as a dysfunctional family orchestra, the band has toured the country with The Elected, Rogue Wave, The Frames, South, The Fray, among others. The band will be traversing the United States this summer as they try out some new psychedelic tricks and play a few golden oldies, including a set at Lollapalooza.
