Mellow man Johnson is relaxed, but not lifeless
Jack Johnson often resembled a cuddly puppy during his Friday performance at Verizon Wireless Music Center.
And, just as young dogs have accidents in the wrong places, Johnson flubbed the lyrics to the first song of the first date of his summer world tour (not to mention a second case of forgetfulness later in the show that attracted an audience of 19,572).
But who could hold a grudge against a cute pet or the world's top surfer-singer-songwriter?
Johnson built his music career on pleasant, mid-tempo, unplugged strum-alongs. It's not a shock that the word "Sleep" is found in the title of his current album ("Sleep Through the Static").
In a live setting, Johnson's challenge is to find enough contrast from tune to tune to help his audience steer clear of dreamland (it's probably no coincidence that his previous album was titled "In Between Dreams").
On Friday, he met the challenge with some help from keyboard player Zach Gill -- a musician on loan from the Animal Liberation Orchestra. In addition to adding a singing voice and serving as a comic foil for Johnson, Gill played various textures on an upright piano, melodica, organ and xylophone.
Johnson strayed from his trusty acoustic guitar to play several songs on electric guitar and one or two on ukulele.
He also made gracious nods to musical influences, inserting snippets of Paul Simon's "Mother and Child Reunion," the Temptations' "My Girl" and Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" into the program.
With enough variety in presentation, the Hawaiian's principal talent of engaging songwriting moved front and center.
The title track from "Sleep Through the Static" resonated as a subtle anti-war statement ("We went beyond where we should have gone"), and 2005's "Banana Pancakes" endures as a strong argument for skipping a day of work.
While Johnson gave his fans what they desired, it could be said that supporting act Mason Jennings stole the show.
The serious-minded troubadour from Minnesota unburdened himself of the song "Jackson Square" as if it were a ton of bricks. Owing a stylistic debt to Bob Dylan, the tune details a haunted relationship that started out just right.
Robust-voiced Jennings portrayed an unlikely optimist during "Be Here Now," and new song "Your New Man" turned the break-up blues on its ear.
Jack Johnson, mason jennings, Concerts, Verizon Wireless Music Center
I'm disappointed you didn't even mention the fact that Jack Johnson announced at the end of the concert he is donating all of the proceeds of Friday's show at Verizon to the American Red Cross in honor of Indiana flood victims. He was also collecting all over the venue for the organization.
True fans enjoy the minor flubs that he handled with humor and grace. That's the beauty of live entertainment. It was an honor to have him open his tour in Indiana. I was dancing all night- never close to sleeping or dreaming. Maybe next time, send someone that might actually enjoy the music and more important, the spirit and message!
We need more musicians and human beings like Jack Johnson, who sets an amazing example through his actions, humility, and concern for all humans and the planet. It would be nice if you did your part and covered it! This is real news and people would appreciate the inspiration- especially now!

I have to plead "deadline" on this one.
To write about a concert for the next day's newspaper, it's impossible to stay for the entire show.
So I missed the Red Cross announcement -- which definitely is a great and newsworthy gesture.

I too was at the show last night. My sister, nephew and I came up from Evansville. It was a nice night, wet from raining all day but no rain at show time. Mason did well for a warm up act with a good feel to his sound. There was quite a bit of time in between set I thought but it gave us a chance to chat with those around us. To me it looked more like 23-25,000 but what do I know? I know that Jack was great. Yeah he messed up a few words and was even out of key once. He smiled that smile, admitted fault, laughed and went on. He gave a good show with songs from each of his five albums. It was fun to see people singing and dancing along with him which is no small feat, as most of his song are fast. Thanks Mr. Johnson for giving back to our state. Please come see us again soon. We love you.

My husband and I were at the concert also, and I have to totally disagree with your comments.
It figures that when an artist that writes songs with clean, fun, messages that soothes the human soul, and stands for something decent, that someone would imply people had to be "helped to steer clear of dreamland".
The whole audience was on their feet dancing and clapping the entire concert!!!
There was not a single time that we felt like we were going to fall asleep during his concert. Not even close.
Jack Johnson is a legend in his own time, uniting all generations together with songs that have awesome lyrics, and amazing melodies with upbeat tempos. In case you did not notice, all generations were represented.
As for Mason Jennings stealing the show, Paleeeeez. If you noticed after a few seconds of him being on the stage with Jack, the audience was not cheering anymore. A person can only take so much of Masons sliding, and swooping before getting a headache after a few songs.
EVERYONE JUST WANTED MORE OF JACK!!!!
Jack also did not have any problem with finding contrast between his songs. Each song has its on unique message!!! The video feed that he had streaming in the back ground took you right there in the moment of each song. Also, just in case you were not there when he lit the stage with stars, the audience flipped!!!!
INDIANA LOVES JACK JOHNSON, AS I AM SURE THE REST OF THE COUNTRY WILL TOO!
THANK-YOU JACK JOHNSON FOR GIVING TO INDIANA, NOT JUST IN AMAZING MUSIC, BUT ALSO WITH MONETARY CONTRIBUTIONS!!! We are honored that you shared your first concert of this tour with Indiana, and hope you return soon!
This country needs more artists like JACK JOHNSON!!!
Not that I want to start something, but I think the reporter was saying that
- Jack's song's are "strum-alongs," sing-song like, easy listening (and perhaps, easy sleeping tunes :))
- That they could sound much of the same
- And, that he "met the challenge" of keeping everyone interested and entertained.

Thanks, Chatty.
You receive an "A" for reading comprehension.
Random, slightly off-subject question:
Was checking out the Mason Jennings tour schedule and I noted that he's playing with or opening for either Johnson or G.Love through much of the summer. So my question is: do artists usually sign on for an entire tour together, or do these musicians just complement each other so well that it's more happenstance than anything else?
David Lindquist : RE: Mellow man Johnson is relaxed, but not lifeless More..
Caralyn: Supporting acts typically sign on for entire legs of tours -- often 30 or 40 dates w/the same headliner.
Two notable headliners who don't operate this way are the Rolling Stones and the Dave Matthews Band. In these cases, there's a rotation of supporting acts who jump on for a handful of dates and then move on.
About the Jack Johnson and the American Red Cross story: Officials at Verizon Wireless Music Center say Johnson pledged to match donations collected on site from Friday's concert attendees.
You have got to be the worst writer ever. I mean you really suck!!!!!!!!! Mason Jennings is by far the most horrible guitar player singer to ever try and make a tune. I mean he sucked. I don't know if jack is just trying to help this guy out or if his taste in music is lack there of. I think we know the answer. Jack Johnson is maybe one of the best acoustic guitar players ever. Not technically difficult but consistent and he turns out more hits than the beatles. You need to check yourself when you write a stupid column like that. You should put down your pen or laptop and never write anything again. Words couldnt even begin to express how bad you really are!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I will agree that I have not supported David Lindquist's claims in the past. However I do not feel as if telling him that he sucks is appropriate. David has to sit through shows such as Friday's whether he enjoys the music or not. Ever go see a Rap festival one night and a country music show one night and then perhaps classical one night. Try it and then write about it, have a good time? I feel that he misses the point of some artists (Grateful Dead, Paul Simon, Phil Lesh, Bob Dylan to name a few) but typically he portrays the events with honest feelings. I would like to see more reviews from smaller venues such as tthe Vogue's show with Mason Jennings and Brett Dennen. Brett Dennen is the new deal. Everyone in the music biz is abuzz about him and he smoked Mason jennings that night. Rolling stone mag confirms that Brett is closer to a Bob Dylanesque style than mason or Jack. Jack is really good but Brett is great. Catch him at Deer Creek and watch him steal the show from John Mayer July 5th, it should be fun. Keep writing David some people appreciate the effort. Grammy

Another reason to love Indy.com: Everyone gets to read the positive reinforcement once reserved for my personal e-mail.
Would anyone happen to know what the name of the song is that Mason Jennings opened with. It was a great tune... just him and the microphone. Awesome show... I got there early and watched it from the 5th row... best show at Verizon in a long time!!!!
Duluth- Mason opened with Duluth- it was a great show- I think smh4 smoked a bit to much of something- Jennings doesn't suck- some people get him, and some people don't- the last thing he needs is help from Jack Johnson- check out his background....it was a great show- Indy was LUCKY to get both of them there- I flew in to see that show from Tampa- and my group was one of 6 groups on our plane returning back to Tampa- it's obvious that the rest of the country already loves Jack & Mason- although I would have preferred Family to Girl I Want to Lay You Down-
