Two Central Indiana orchestras have prided themselves for years on featuring youth, but young soloists will be even more prominent next season.
The Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra and Carmel Symphony Orchestra have lined up about 10 guest soloists in their 20s and 30s. They include a pair of prize-winning violinists, the daughter of a local conductor and a man the New York Times called "the maverick organist."
The Chamber Orchestra will open its season on Sept. 20 with violinist Chloe Trevor, a Cleveland Institute of Music student who is the daughter of ICO Music Director Kirk Trevor.
"I've played a lot with Chloe, but this is the first time to do the Barber (Violin) Concerto with her," said Trevor.
Although the roster of young artists performing with the ICO isn't always as extensive as it will be next season, Trevor said, the orchestra has "always been committed to young artists. Since I came here, we featured (violinist) Lara St. John, (guitarist) Sharon Isbin and a lot of good artists under 40. These days, the journeyman soloist is usually too expensive for us, relative to the amount of public interest."
The 2008-09 season will feature also two performers with the same first name: Brooklyn-based pianist Simone Dinnerstein, who is known for her recording of J.S. Bach's "Goldberg Variations," and Simone Lamsma, the Dutch silver medalist of the 2006 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis.
The Carmel Symphony also has a tradition of youth outreach. Each year, it offers a family concert and features the winner of a young-artist competition it sponsors.
The 2008-09 season in Carmel will showcase New York-based organist Cameron Carpenter in Joseph Jongen's "Symphony Concertante" in November. Violinist Robin Scott, who grew up in Indianapolis and won second prize in France's 2006 Yehudi Menuhin International Competition for Young Violinists, will perform the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in April.
Carmel Symphony president Alan Davis said this year's lineup "was not a strategy as far as promoting younger artists was concerned, as much as people we felt would really resonate in our community."
