Our friends at Cinematical have unearthed a rumor that screenwriter James Vanderbilt, who penned the criminally underrated "Zodiac," has turned in a draft of "Spider-Man 4" to the studio, which supposedly encompasses a two-film arc. This allegedly leads in to the idea that the next two films in the Spidey franchise will be shot back-to-back.
Rumor has had it since Spidey 3 that of the triumverate of Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire, and Kirsten Dunst, at least one and possibly two or all three will be absent from the film.
I enjoyed their work (my well-publicized disappointment of Spidey 3 notwithstanding), but I think a new director (assuming they hire someone decent) and new leading actors could jump into the next stage of evolution for the franchise, hopefully nudging it toward Chris Nolan territory and not Joel Schumacher Land.
I think Spidey, with his large, interesting rogues gallery, could become the 007 of super heroes, where it doesn't really matter who is playing the wall-crawler as long as its someone who looks the part.
Having said that, what's the best direction for the franchise to take? What villain(s) should be involved?
I personally am interested in seeing a good portrayal of Kraven the Hunter, with Scorpion, Electro, or Shocker mixed in.
The Lizard has already been introduced in the other movies, so he's a good possibility. Rhino, Kingpin, and Vulture are also decent options.
But I definitely want Carnage...and maybe more justice to Venom. Spiderman fighting a similar character with equal abilities is fun to watch. Venom would have to help Spiderman to beat Carnage...that would be great...but too similar to Spiderman 3 with Green Goblin.

The reason I didn't mention Carnage is because I think they need to get some of those other characters out of the way in the next film. Maybe Brock should return for SM4, but have Spider-Man mixed up with another villain...I admit I forgot about The Lizard in the moment I wrote that and will go with that as the next natural villain. Maybe he can fight The Lizard and just have Brock messing with him and threatening Aunt May, etc. He can take down The Lizard at the end of Act 2, then fight it out with Venom at the end, with the Carnage spawn coming at the end of the movie or something.
