I'm inspired to post this because yesterday was my birthday, and I received some excellent stuff, some of which is pictured on the right. A DVD of propaganda films from the 40s and 50s railing against the threat of Communism. A documentary about the I.W.W., a radical leftist union. Sea-Monkey paraphanalia. The third season of The Twilight Zone. I also received a controlled substance about which I probably shouldn't be more specific. Drinky is a lucky guy.

So, what presents that you've received over the years stand out in your mind?

Only thing that comes to mind and that was because I told her that was ALL I wanted for xmas was ROCK BAND for the Xbox 360.

Thanks. Rock Band is brilliant. I don't have any sort of game system of my own, but I play it at a friend's house all the time. I rock it like several hurricanes.

I've been told I'm exceedingly difficult to buy for, so I'm rarely surprised or totally thrilled with receiving gifts. Giving gifts, however, is one of my greatest joys.

But the best gift I ever received was an autoharp. An autoharp I neither asked for nor knew I wanted. That my parents decided this was what I needed and scoured music stores and pawn shops until they found one totally touched me.

Along with my lap steel, the autoharp is my most prized possession.

All I need is an accordion and I'll have a kickass band.

I got a car for graduating and they paid for college so that was pretty cool. I also got to go to Vegas for my 21st birthday. Those would probably be my favs.

The best gifts I've ever received are invariably the ones that take the most thought, instead of the most money. Picture frames that already had my photography in them when I unwrapped them was pretty cool. Even if I didn't notice they were my pictures right away. An ex-girlfriend went out and ordered custom floor mats for my '94 Impala SS. And another ex surprised me with a biography of Nick Drake because she noticed I had all of his albums on my iPod. These are all things I wouldn't have thought to ask for...but really appreciated when I got them.
