'80s genre veterans find nostalgia pays (but Spandex is out)
By day, members of the Rock Show hold down jobs: architect, contractor, deputy county clerk, sound engineer and Internet entrepreneur.
By night, vocalist Tony Diekhoff, bass player Duane Conn, guitarist Craig "Shred" Savage, drummer Kevin Corra and keyboard player Lyle McCoy play the same style of music they did in the 1980s: Hair metal.
The Bloomington musicians have left Aqua Net behind but kept their lengthy locks.
In live shows, the band performs the hits of Guns N' Roses, Motley Crue, Poison, Bon Jovi and Def Leppard.
As Diekhoff and Conn recently told Indy.com, nostalgia translates into success.
"It's what the clubs want," Diekhoff says. "They'll call you up when they have a retro night. Everyone in the crowd will wear concert T-shirts and their mullet wigs. For one night, we get paid what we were paid for a week in the 1980s."
On the '80s hair-metal lifestyle: "It was a good time," Diekhoff says. "I'll say it: I was young, I had no responsibilities and I took advantage of it. You'd be in the bar every night, and that's where you wanted to be at that age."
On fans: "People in their late 30s dig the music because it's taking them back," he says. "I think the younger crowd likes the music because their parents listened to it. They recognize it."
On the Seattle sound that pushed hair metal out in the early 1990s: "I didn't resent it," Diekhoff says. "I liked some of it. Alice in Chains and Nirvana were cool. I knew it wouldn't last forever."
On yesteryear's look: "It was glam," Diekhoff says. "Everybody was trying to look like a girl. We had hair down to our waists, but you wouldn't believe how high it was, too. I wore eye liner, Spandex. We don't wear Spandex today."
On the mystique of long hair: "It's still the most anti-establishment thing," Conn says. "You can get a tattoo instantly. You have to take a lot of stuff to have long hair over the years. You get it all the way from your parents saying, 'Your hair is too long. Cut it and get a job,' to people at school saying, 'Hey, hippie.'."
On the band's authenticity: "We don't wear wigs," Diekhoff says. "Our saying is, 'We don't have to take our hair off to go to bed.'. "
On performances: "You see tons of energy and tons of hair being thrown around," he says. "I don't think we've ever done a show where people haven't had a great time."
