Kenseth clings to No. 12 as Vickers, Kyle Busch lurk

Only Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Denny Hamlin have clinched spots in NASCAR’s championship Chase heading into the Sprint Cup regular-season finale Saturday night at Richmond, Va. Eleven drivers remain mathematically in contention for the final eight spots, with Matt Kenseth (who joins Johnson as the only drivers to qualify for the Chase every year since it began in 2004) on the bubble. Points are scaled from 185 for a win to 34 for placing 43rd, with five bonus points awarded for leading a lap and five for leading the most laps. The contenders:

Carl Edwards

Now: Fifth, 105 points ahead of 13th place. Clinches if: Finishes 24th or better or 25th and leads a lap.

At Richmond: 0 wins, 0 top fives, 3 top 10s in 10 starts.

At Richmond: 1 win, 3 top fives, 9 top 10s in 19 starts.

Brian Vickers

Now: 13th, 20 points out of 12th place. Clinches if: Gains 21 points on Kenseth and stays ahead of Kyle Busch and David Reutimann.
