I read a very interesting story about Hypermiling and how it can cut your costs in half or more if your good at it. It includes coasting when you can, staying off of your brakes etc. Check out this very cool idea:

I tried this and it helped me get better mileage last weekend.

I have always used many of these techniques while driving. Constantly baffled by folks who accelerate toward stop lights.

We noticed your post this morning and then we heard an interview on the radio with the guy behind the website cited in the CBS article (www.cleanmpg.com). Seems like pretty common sense stuff but common sense isn't so common. We are going to stop short of pushing our car off a hill and then jumping in it after it starts rolling though.

I hadn't heard of the techniques - When I saw the word Hypermiling I pictured people doing the extreme drafting behind semi's with their engines shut off.

The website he runs is very interesting. I actually tried the techniques coming into work. Timing lights and creating the buffer zone seems to be the hardest part. I just want to accelerate everywhere.

If anyone does this and measures their results I'd like to see them posted.

Might have to fill up this weekend and give it a shot for a few days and see what happens.
