My son likes rap music - heck so do I. I like everthing - you name it, if I'm in the mood for it I can enjoy it. He listens to 100.9 on the radio and I enjoyit too, but some of the lyrics are - my opinion - too explicit for a 12 year old boy. I want more artist like the one who (I think) the song is titled I can do it (or maybe get it or be it) if I want it - or something like that. Positive message, no nasty words, etc. I joined Napster so he can download music to his mp3 player but am at a loss on what to let him get. Anybody know some safe rap artists....
Here are some:
Blackalicious, The Roots, Brother Ali, De La Soul, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, Atmosphere, Buck 65, MF Doom, Digable Planets, Edan, Gnarls Barkley, Gorillaz, Gruf, Josh Martinez. Some of these may have certain songs that aren't completely positive, but for the most part they are. A lot of old-school hip-hop had a more positive vibe as well.
Ben named a bunch of good artists. I would also add Jurassic 5, A Tribe Called Quest, The Pharcyde, Deltron 3030, Hieroglyphics, De La Soul, any Beastie Boy's stuff after 1997, Mars Ill, Indy's own Mudkids - 4trackMind album...and many more.
Don't think everything you hear on the radio is representative of Hip-hop..true hip-hop is nothing like 96.3 music.
A lot of artists cuss, that's not soo bad, it's the message that's important.
Thanks guys - I'll give him the list and suggest he give a listen. I don't mind the cussing SO much as the vulgar references and sexual innuendo. It's o.k. for me to listen to, but I hesitate condoning it for a 12 year old. Thanks again!
Oh yeah, The Pharcyde "passing me by" man that song takes me back
Get that boy some 2 Live Crew!!
But seriously, Kanye West and Lupe Fiasco are positive for the most part. I agree on Talib Kweli, Common, The Roots, Pharcyde, A Tribe Called Quest and Jurassic 5 but I don't know how much a 12 year old would like them.
