Brand spankin' new sammy and salad joint, Tossed on 96th Street, is great for a super healthy lunch. Plus, being open until 9 p.m. allows you to satisfy your nighttime salad cravings . . . if you get those. Weirdo.

The mood

As my husband and I entered, we felt like we were stepping into a Starbucks. Big, open windows let the light in around a room filled with cafe tables and booths. But rather than lattes and muffins, this insanely large menu is made up mostly of veggies!

There wasn't a huge crowd, but the other occupied tables consisted of summer breakers, and a few who brought work to lunch via their laptops.

The food

Would "swanky" be the right word? Tossed claims to bring fashion to your salad plate --and with trend comes expense. The prices range from $5.95 for a Caesar salad to upwards of $11 for a cayenne shrimp salad, but it's worth it. The menu contains predetermined salads and crepes. (I think the only thing pre-made was the ice.) Sandwiches and melts make for a heartier choice along with freshly blended smoothies and dessert crepes. A list of five lettuces; 60-plus "Toss-Ins," including buffalo chicken, jicama and goat cheese and 24 dressings allow you to make your own salad or crepe.

We wound our way through the tables up to the counter to order, but faced with so many choices we had to choose a seat and take a closer look. Fifteen minutes later Hayden had settled on the spinach salad ($7.95) and I, the pesto chicken crepe ($7.95). You also may order online for carryout, or to save time on your in-house menu searching.

The spinach salad was tossed with shiitake and Portobello mushrooms, bacon, onions, potatoes, croutons and Balsamic vinaigrette.

My crepe was much larger than expected and served with a side of warm tortilla chips. The pesto flavor was lacking in the chicken, but it was still delicious with big chunks of fresh mozzarella, sun-dried tomatoes, field greens and a lemon basil vinaigrette wrapped in a whole-wheat crepe.

The drinks

We both had ice water out of the fountain in order to splurge and have a smoothie: classic, icy, strawberry and banana ($3.95).

The damage: $21.24

No tip is required at Tossed. Having been born in New York, Tossed has East Coast pricing that may have carried over.

But don't let that, or the drive to Fishers discourage you.
