Norville Barnes (Tim Robbins' character from THE HUDSUCKER PROXY) is from Muncie, and Jennifer Jason Leigh's character pretended to be.

Is this a stretch?

Hey, I like the idea of talking about fictional Hoosier characters!

I like to note that the famous Cary Grant vs. Crop Duster scene in North By Northwest apparently/most likely takes place in Indiana. If you watch, Grant is taking a bus from Chicago to Indianapolis and gets off in the middle of nowhere, where he is greeted by the crop duster. Assuming they didn't take some strange circuitous route through Illinois, the scene likely happens on Hoosier soil.

A chunk of Close Encounters of the Third Kind was set in Muncie.

I think the movie "A Christmas Story" was set in Hammond. Scenes from "A League of Their Own" were filmed in Indiana along with other more obvious Hoosier sports movies like "Hoosiers", "Rudy" and "Breaking Away". On the small screen, the original "Saved by the Bell" was set in Indianapolis before they moved the whole school to California.

"Star Trek: Voyager"'s Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) was from Bloomington. There was actually a Voyager episode set in Bloomington, despite the fact that Voyager and its entire crew is stranded on the opposite end of the galaxy, 70,000 light years away, from the first to last episodes.

And the guy who played Travis Mayweather in "Enterprise" is from Indy in real life. Someone mentioned Wes Montgomery, he's actually Wes' son, Anthony Montgomery.

Dexter, Jean Shepherd (author of "A Christmas Story") was raised in Hammond but the moviemakers thought that Indiana looked too "modern" when they were scouting locations so they chose to film some of it in Cleveland because it still looked really industrial. In fact, you can tour the house all year 'round: http://www.achristmasstoryhouse.... (I know all of this because I just took that tour last month.)

Did anyone mention Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20?

It was partly set in Muncie. The Richard Dreyfuss character supposedly lives in Muncie. "Muncie" appears at the bottom of the screen. It wasn't filmed there, however. As noted, the terrain is all wrong. There is nothing one could recognize as being Muncie-esque unless you count the aliens.

Ah. i remember being told that the night-time scene where you see the McDonald's was actually filmed on the strip where the Muncie mall is (the McDonald's was across the street from it. Perhaps i was misinformed. its been years since i have seen that movie anyhow...
