I liked Austin Powers 2 more than 1, it was definately better than the first movie, and more quotable.

Although The Godfather was a great movie, I've always thought the sequel was better. The whole parallel structure with a young Godfather (played by De Niro) filmed in near-sepia tones was wonderful. And, of course, there's the classic stuff with Pacino's kiss of death and Fredo swimming with the fishes.

I'll disagree about "Back to the Future," because the first is a classic. I did enjoy all three of those films quite a bit, though.

I really can't find issue with any of the others mentioned here. I'd have to say "Alien" and "Aliens" are roughly equal, but only because I love "Alien" so much I can't bear to say the sequel is actually better, but both are dynamite.

"The Empire Strikes Back" is still the best of the Star Wars sextilogy (is that the right word?).

X-Men was always designed to be a franchise, but I don't think it was a pre-ordained trilogy by your definition, though I also believe the "Star Wars" as a trilogy (or dual trilogies) to be false as well--I think it's one of the great urban legends/farces/outright lies of all time (but that's a different discussion). And there is the upcoming "Wolverine" movie that is a bit of a spinoff rather than a direct sequel. :)

"Spider-Man 2" is far superior to the original as well, and I think also falls into the franchise category rather than trilogy.

What about prequels? Batman Begins is definitely the best of the Batman films for me. Also enjoyed Wayne's Word 2 better than the first.

I hear ya but for me, Back to the Future 2 was the first movie I remember that realistically showed me what the future could be like. It used cool special effects and great presentation to make me believe I was gonna be riding a hover board by 2015 (there is still hope). As a kid, and even today, that was much more attractive to me than going back in time. The future looked awesome. I didn't care for part 3 at all...the western theme was boring.

But for real...I want a hover board pretty bad.

I agree with Spiderman 2, I did like it better than the original. I don't really like the Green Goblin as a villain...origins get kinda lame, lets get to the action.

Actually if you would split the Star Wars sextilogy into dual trilogies, then I would choose the second film in both series as the best.

Empire is the best of them all, but Attack of the Clones is the best of the prequels.

And I would put the 3rd installment of the Indiana Jones trilogy as the best in the series. The Last Crusade far surpassed the others.

Eh, I don't know about that. I think Raiders was the best of the three, but I enjoyed all of them (and unlike a lot of other people, I'm not a hater on "Temple of Doom")

I also think that each of the Harry Potter films has been better than the film before it. So at this time the Order of the Pheonix is the best in the sequence

I thought Revenge of the Sith was the best of the prequel series.

This may sound stupid but I think Next Friday was the best of the Friday series. I think DeDe - Mike Epps (Indiana Native) was much funnier than Smokey's - Chris Tucker's character. And it introduced Pinky...who I still quote to this day.

I don't know that many people that agree with me but the original Friday bored me.

It was great, but I just felt that "Clones" was entertaining, and divulged a lot of information about the series, and answered a lot of questions.

I actually think I liked Clones better as well, but I think choosing a favorite in the prequel trilogy is like deciding whether you like root canal work as opposed to gall bladder surgery.

I think Sith gets a little too much praise, and I found the Anakin/Obi-Wan saber battle to be a little cold, unemotional and over produced.

I liked Revenge of the Nerds II better as well as Grease II better!

I totally disagree about Back to the Future 2 being better than the first movie. The first is the only BttF movie that I'd even consider watching these days. I saw the second one - or rather parts of it - on TV a couple years ago. It just seemed hackneyed to me.
