Whenever friends come from out of town to visit me, they always comment on two things: the never-ending road construction AND the crappy radio stations here.
After hearing the Jazz and Top 40 radio fans getting all bent out of shape over the deal with 93.1 & 100.9, I started thinking. The radio stations here DO kind of suck.
You go to any other major city and there's probably something worthy to listen to on at least more than one frequencey. HD & satelite radio were practically invented for this town.
It usually helps to have a CD player as well when you're fighting the road construction traffic. To me, even though there are several different radio stations here, it always seems like they have 10 songs played constantly and that's it.
Several radio stations here seem to play the same artists over and over again too. How many times can one station play Bob Seger during the course of a day anyway?
With all of these people crying over the demise of one station and the re-birth of another, toss me a tissue because I just want some good radio stations here PERIOD. Who's with me on this?
Completely agreed. Corporate radio in this town is generally dull. Even the "independent" stations like WKLU and WTTS are caught in a "classic hits" rut.
Too bad only the listeners on the North and East sides of Indy can tune us in (91.7 WEEM - www.917weem.org). There's a reason most of the nation's up and coming artists consider us a touring destination, and it's not just our affiliation with SIRIUS (though that helps tremendously).
I'd like to think there's money to be made in offering Indianapolis a TRUE alternative station. Internet revenues have now passed radio on a national level. Which station will be bold enough to serve dissatisfied listeners?

I work on the east side of town and have listened to your station quite a few times. It's one of the better stations at that end of the dial. A lot of the high school stations that are around that frequency play some pretty good stuff too. Isn't it kind of lame that for a town that has a winning Superbowl team, the best radio stations are the high school stations? These corporate radio stations are killing what made radio great in the first place--the music.
Check out the documentary "Before The Music Dies." It's a pretty clear and scathing look at the corporate music infrastructure. Some of the segments are online.
My only frustrations with the other h.s. stations are that some try to mimmic commercial stations (but with amateur jocks), or worse yet, try to mimmic ALL corporate stations for the sake of "variety." PIck a format (preferably one that is under-served in the area) and stick to it. Or do what we've done: pick an existing format and support new artists and those who are ignored by the corporate stations.
