'Across the Hall': Short film

In this 17-minute film, directed by Alan Powell, recently emigrated Miguel has a hard time dealing with diverse cultures. Miguel's refusal to acknowledge his cross-dressing neighbor eventually has the kids defying his authority. Despite this bleak-sounding synopsis, this short film is actually part of a program of eight comedy shorts called "The World Laughs With You," which runs three times during the Indianapolis International Film Festival. At the program's first screening, April 25, special guest Craig Robinson -- Darryl from "The Office" -- will make an appearance. (Robinson stars in one of the other shorts.)

Where: Landmark's Keystone Arts Cinema at the Fashion Mall, 8702 Keystone Crossing.

When: 8:45.p.m. Friday, April 25; 7:30.p.m. Tuesday, April 29; noon Wednesday, April 30.

Gender-bending film fare

Drag movies

Drag, as defined by dictionary.com, is "clothing characteristically associated with one sex when worn by a person of the opposite sex," but that really doesn't tell you much. For a more detailed appreciation of female impersonators on stage, begin by watching these movies.

1: "The Birdcage" (1996).

2: "To Wong Foo Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar" (1995).

3: "Kinky Boots" (2005).

4: "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" (1994).

5: "Flawless" (1999).

6: "Connie and Carla" (2004).

7: "Paris is Burning" (1990).

Transgender movies

The decision to switch genders is regarded in various ways. For the person in question, it can be terrifying. For loved ones, mystifying. For the closed-minded, horrifying. If you really want to develop an understanding of this complex topic, start with these films.

1: "Bad Education (La Mala Educacion)" (2004).

2: "Boys Don't Cry" (1999).

3: "Transamerica" (2005).

4: "The Crying Game" (1992).

5: "Breakfast on Pluto" (2004).

6: "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" (2001).

  1. "Different for Girls" (1996).

Cross-dressing movies

Call us crazy, but we decided to leave titles like "White Chicks," "Sorority Boys" and "Big Mama's House" off our list of recommendations for movies in which genders pose as their opposite. But some of these are, naturally, less serious than others.

1: "Tootsie" (1982).

2: "Some Like It Hot" (1959).

3: "Yentl" (1983).

4: "She's the Man" (2006).

5: "Just One of the Guys" (1985).

6: "Ed Wood" (1994).

7: "Glen or Glenda" (1953).
