Top 10 Live is a collaborative effort between the Indy.com staff and Indianapolismusic.net.
1. The Black Keys w/ Jay Reatard
8 p.m. April 13, The Vogue, 6259 N. College Ave., SOLD OUT, (317) 259-7029.
Rock duo the Black Keys have relied on nothing more than stripped-down guitar/ drums/vocals sound to grow into one of the country's most acclaimed rock acts. Up to now they've produced their own records, skipping studios to record in an abandoned tire factory. That system changed with their latest release, "Attack & Release." The duo teamed up with Gnarls Barkley's Danger Mouse and spent 11 days tracking the record in a studio.
2. Feist
7:30 p.m. April 11, IU Auditorium, 1211 E. Seventh St., Bloomington. $28. (812) 855-1103
Canada's indie rock invasion continues this week as Feist visits Bloomington as part of the annual Little 500 weekend. Feist had built a fan base with her solo work and participation in indie rock collective Broken Social Scene. Her greatest success came last year when the video for "1234" appeared in an Apple iPod ad. That exposure launched her into the top 10 of the U.S. singles chart.
3. Cloud Cult, The Forms, Sisters
9 p.m. April 12, Radio Radio, 1119 E. Prospect. St., $10. (317) 955-0995
Local fans of this art/experimental pop group were disappointed in January when the band had to cancel a scheduled show. The group makes up for the missed date this week as they visit with the Forms and Sisters opening. Cloud Cult is touring in support of its forthcoming album, "Feel Good Ghosts." Along with the musical performance, Cloud Cult shows also incorporate onstage painting and other visual and performance art.
4. Clutch w/ Kamchatka
8:30 p.m. April 15, The Vogue, 6259 N College Ave., $25, !(317) 259-7029.
Hard-rock act Clutch hasn't had the mainstream hits or platinum albums of similar bands. They have, however, earned loyal fans due to their touring and steady stream of new records. The band, compared sonically to Queens of the Stone Age or Deftones, rocks Indy's metal and hard-rock fans this week as they tour in support of their 2007 album "From Beale Street to Oblivion."
5. 'Defunct Indiana' CD release party
9 p.m. April 12, Spin Nightclub, 6308 Guilford Ave., $8, (317) 257-0000.
Musical Family Tree has been on a mission to make sure bands from the past are not forgotten. Its Web site (www.musicalfamilytree.com) hosts MP3 files from Indiana acts that have broken up or faded away. This week, it reunites a handful of those bands and releases a compilation of tracks. Intro to Airlift, America Owns the Moon, Lukewarm Bodies (At Best), BIGBIGcar and Rooms get back together to perform. Admission includes a copy of the CD.
6. The Booze w/ Red Light Driver & Noah East
9 p.m. April 16, Birdy's Bar & Grill, 2131 E. 71st St., $6, (317) 254-8971.
Sometimes it's tough to muster the energy to go out on a Wednesday night, but this buzz act should provide enough motivation. The group continues the garage/mod/soul revival with a raw sound inspired by such bands as the Yardbirds and Small Faces. The Booze's profile was boosted recently, thanks to a plug in popular celebrity gossip blog PerezHilton.com.
7. Minus The Bear
9 p.m. April 15, The Bluebird, 216 N. Walnut St., Bloomington, $15. (812) 336-3984.
Some music fans still define the hard rock grunge of the '90s as the "Seattle Sound," but much of the music coming from the Pacific Northwest these days takes on a lighter, poppier feel. Minus the Bear fits nicely in that modern definition. Their sharp 8melodies, clever arrangements, and whimsical song titles ("Monkey!!! Knife!!! Fight!!!") have earned them a nationwide cult following.
8. The BoDeans w/ GB Leighton
9 p.m. April 11, The Vogue, 6259 N. College Ave., $25, (317) 259-7029.
Now two decades into their music career, the BoDeans continue to define Midwestern power pop and roots rock. The Milwaukee-based group has been a longtime area favorite, visiting Indy for numerous club and festival dates even when they weren't promoting a record. This time they are supporting a new album, their first in four years, called "Still." Minneapolis-based rock singer/songwriter GB Leighton opens.
9. Country Music Expo
April 12 and 13, Indiana State Fairgrounds, 1202 E. 38th St., Free/$70, countrymusicexpo.com.
Big names John Rich, Trisha Yearwood, Jo Dee Messina and Jewel share the bill with up-and-comers at this annual expo, co-sponsored by radio station WFMS-FM (95.5). Thirteen artists are scheduled to appear and perform acoustic mini-concerts during the two-day event. Tickets are free via ticket drop locations, or you can buy a two-day "gold circle" pass for $70. Find more details at countrymusicexpo.com.
10. 16, Virgil, Bulletwolf, Maravich
8 p.m. April 16, Melody Inn, 3826 N Illinois St., $5, (317) 923-4707
Heavy music will pound the walls of the Melody Inn for this midweek show. 16 visits with a sound that's been called "stark, harsh and brutal" by one reviewer. Its sound has landed the band on stage with Slayer, Fu Manchu, and Nebula. Virgil, Bulletwolf, and Maravich, some of the finest representatives of the recent crop of hard rock acts coming out of Indy, will open the show.
Thanks. Fixed.

SSLYBY is coming? And no mention on top 10?! Blasphemy!
Thanks for the heads up, I hadn't even heard they were gonna be in town.

I offer my same question I always pose when someone wonders why a show is missing from this list...
What show on the list do you think should be replaced by the one you recommend?

Easy...Country Music Expo!
Easy...Country Music Expo!
So you don't think Indy's country music fans deserve to have a show in Top 10? Isn't the local country music radio station the most listened-to in the city? I wonder what the overall interst level in Country Music Expo was compared to the show you suggested (or any of the other shows on the list for that matter).
Believe me, these are all devil's advocate questions. Had the two actually swapped, I'd probably have country fans asking why their event got overlooked.
The Boris Yeltsin show probably didn't get as much attention from the voters this week because of the number of other strong indie shows on deck. Just a theory.
I'm sure I'll get blasted for this, but it's worth saying. You really should have the Hanson concert in your Top 10 for this week. Indy.com lists it as "Teen pop," but if you listened to their latest album, "The Walk," you'd hear soulful rock and roll. My fiance and I, as well as some other friends, are all 30 year-old Hanson fans. I couldn't stand them 10 years ago when they were pre-teen heart throbs, but since they've grown up, their music has changed. They left their record label, started their own indie label, write all their own songs, and play everything, too. They really are very talented. Too many people don't give them a chance because of "MMMMBop." They're missing out. Come to the show at the Murat on Tuesday. We saw them in Milwaukee on Friday night, and the two opening acts are pretty good too. (Stephen Kellogg & the Sixers, Kate Voegle)

I think that show was 11th or so in the voting. I believe they were on the top 10 when they played in Bloomington a few weeks back.
