This is a grave marker I would die to have.

When I was looking for a way to kill time on Saturday afternoon, I ended up driving by Crown Hill and deciding to head in for a bit to do some investigating. I quickly regretted getting there so late in the day, I could have spent the entire weekend meandering and discovering. I loved the Gothic Chapel, it seemed to be in its exactly right place in the world. Walking slowly through the graves, appreciating the most simple markers juxtaposed next to the most ornate, I tried to decipher how and if our status in life follows us after we have left it behind us.

The view of the city from James Whitcomb Riley's grave is something that I'll never forget. Nor is the stark punch to the gut that I emotionally received when standing in the middle of the military cemetery. Recognizing family names that I have come to learn from living here almost all of my life gave me a sense of the history of our city. And realizing that those recognizable names were such a minority in the cemetery reminded me that that same city has been built upon the shoulders of people I will never know of. I am incredibly grateful for them all.

I've heard other people mention a similar experience after making a first visit to Crown Hill for reasons other than needing to attend a funeral. I still plan to do it some day. Mindful of your remarks, when I do finally go, I'll make a point to get there early.

I've been trying to attach a couple of pics to the post, but keep getting an error message. I'll try again later on, there's a couple that just amaze me.

Thanks for pointing out that we have a problem there.

We're working on it and should have photo uploading fixed asap.

I was finally able to attach the pics to this post that I'd wanted to do. I am so not a photographer by nature, but these turned out fairly well and kind of captured the feeling of the time I spent there that day. I guess that's the whole point of pictures, isn't it?

A friend and I went there at about 3 A.M. one morning and went to Riley's grave. It's quite breathtaking in the middle of the night. Also technically not legal, but hey, they should fix the holes in the walls if they want to keep people out. I also make sure to check out Dillinger's grave whenever I go there and leave him an Altoid or two. I'm sure his breath must be pretty bad by now.
