As the nation prepares for one of the biggest transformations in the television industry since the advent of color TV, an overwhelming number of Americans are puzzled by the imminent DTV conversion and its impact on their viewing habits after February 17, 2009 -- the date U.S. broadcasters will cease transmitting analog television signals.
On Wednesday, April 9 at 10:30 pm, view a "primer" on the digital transition when WFYI Public Television presents the broadcast special, "The ABCs of HDTV."
Hosted by broadcast veteran Nick Clooney, "The ABCs of HDTV" will address the different ways TV viewers can make the transition from analog to digital television; offer viewers a detailed explanation of the federal DTV coupon program for converter boxes; and outline the household equipment needed to receive and experience DTV in all its brilliance. Representatives from major electronic chains will offer helpful advice on the difference between plasma and LCD screen resolutions and other commonly asked questions about DTV. The program also features an interview with PBS President Paula Kerger, in which she discusses the new possibilities presented by the digital transition.
WFYI Public Television is also currently airing a series of informative DTV spots that feature local broadcast veteran Joni Michels, offering viewers timely information about this new frontier in television, and fans of PBS' "This Old House" will find the information contained in a new DTV public service announcement hosted by Norm Abram and Kevin O'Connor, especially helpful.
Additionally, WFYI Public Television has devoted a portion of its online resources to the digital television movement. Viewers will find a wealth of DTV resources at their fingertips when they visit wfyi.org, and click on the DTV icon located on WFYI's homepage. The site features a frequently asked questions section, a glossary of terms, information on the federal coupon program for converter boxes, listings for all three of WFYI's DTV programming services, and much more.
