Today:
Have you had good experiences seeing plays or musicals inspired by movies? Seeing the touring Broadway company of "Twelve Angry Men" was a good experience, both because the performance was great and because the transformation from the screenplay was excellent. I remember loving the script of the '50s black-and-white film "12 Angry Men" with Henry Fonda. But the experience of seeing it "live" as a play was almost as good. That hasn't always been true - the musical "Sunset Boulevard" being an example.
I haven't seen too many musicals, just the typical: Phanton of the Opera, Fiddler on the Roof, West Side Story, etc. I know Phantom was a musical first, and then a movie (and I did hear that Andrew Lloyd Webber is now in the process of writing a sequel!), but I'm not sure with the other two if they were movies first and then musicals. I thought the transformation of Lion King from a movie to a musical was pretty amazing. I really enjoyed the musical Aida, and that's one that I would like to see turned into a movie.
I love all plays and musicals, but it's so- so as far as whether I like ones that have been movies before. Sometimes it sort of ruins it for me, ya know? Not always, though. Lion King is a huge example. I'd also seen Henry Ford in the black and white movie, and at first I thought it'd ruin the play for me, but that soon passed. I loved it!
