Top 10 Live is a collaboration between the Indy.com staff and Indianapolismusic.net.

1. Common
8:30 p.m. April 3, Clowes Hall, 4602 Sunset Ave., $15-25, (317) 940-6444.

Once one of the leading voices of hip-hop's underground, Common has reached a point where he is everything but an underground artist. His latest album, 2007's "Finding Forever," debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard album chart. He followed it up with a greatest hits collection and has another record planned for release in late 2008. He's also added acting to his resume, appearing in "Smokin' Aces" and "American Gangster" last year.

2. Margot & the Nuclear So & So's w/ Bon Iver
10 p.m. April 4, The Vogue, 6259 N. College Ave., $22, (317) 259-7029.

There are a couple of reasons why this Friday show at the Vogue should be packed. One: It's the annual Rock For Riley event. The concert is planned and executed by IU medical students and benefits Riley Hospital For Children. Two: The headlining act is locally-bred indie rock group Margot & the Nuclear So & So's. The show gives fans a chance to hear songs from their album due out in July.

3. Naptown Juke Stomp 2
9:30 p.m. April 4, Radio Radio, 1119 E. Prospect St., $5, (317) 955-0995.

The Naptown Juke Stomp has a couple of goals. It was started to celebrate Indy's Naptown Roller Girls. It's also a low-dough event designed to get music fans out without putting a dent in their wallets. This lineup features rockabilly from Mandy Marie & The Cool Hand Lukes, dance rock from Action Strasse, eclectic punk from The Dockers, and hard rock from the Cocaine Wolves.

4. Shooter Jennings w/ Eddie Spaghetti
8:30 p.m. April 6, Music Mill, 3720 E. 82nd St., $17, (317) 841-1850.

The son of country stars Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter, Shooter Jennings has forged his career with a rocking version of country music that lives up to his parents' "outlaw" reputations. A hard-working artist, Shooter has released four albums since 2005 while touring relentlessly. He also hosts a weekly show on Sirius Radio's Outlaw Country channel.

5. Broadzilla, Johnie 3, Peggy Sues, Vibrolas
10:30 p.m. April 5, The Melody Inn, 3826 N. Illinois St., $7, (317) 923-4707.

Punk Rock Night takes on a female twist this week with women powering three of the four bands on the bill. Detroit's Broadzilla headlines with a heavy rock sound blending punk and old school metal. Indy group the Peggy Sues joins them as the second all-female band on the bill, while Kentucky-based trio the Vibrolas features bassist Leila Coppala driving the rhythm section. Only Johnie 3, from Youngstown, Ohio, brings the rock without female help.

6. Glen Phillips w/ Jonathan Kingham
8:30 p.m. April 9, Music Mill, 3720 E. 82nd St., $15, (317) 841-1850.

Being a solo artist must not be a natural fit for Glen Phillips. The former singer for Toad the Wet Sprocket has released three records as a solo artist and toured to support each. Despite solo success, Phillips continues to join records and tour with other groups. He's currently tied to an eight-member "supergroup" featuring former members of Nickel Creek called the Scrolls and another trio called Plover. Both are due to release records in 2008.

7. Bitch & the Exciting Conclusion w/ Cordero
9 p.m. April 6, Radio Radio, 1119 E. Prospect St., $6, (317) 955-0995.

The artist simply known as Bitch comes to Indy with a reputation for delivering a show that lives up to her provocative stage name. The beat poet/singer/instrumentalist combines her talents in musical events that border on performance art. Bitch also branched out into label ownership with the launch of her own Short Story Records earlier this year. Multilingual indie rockers Cordero open.

8. Art Adams, BJ Rogers Murder Inc., Bob's Liquor Lounge
9 p.m. April 4, Sam's Saloon, 1640 E. Prospect St.

The century-old building that houses Sam's Saloon should be an ideal venue for this night of rockabilly and retro sounds. Rockabilly Hall of Fame member Art Adams heads up the night with the authentic roots rock he's been performing since the 1950s. BJ Rogers Murder Inc. perform what they call "mob rock," a sound blending rockabilly with a nod to classic crooners. The throwback honky-tonk of Bob's Liquor Lounge rounds out the night.

9. Fareed Haque Flat Earth Ensemble
7 and 9 p.m. April 9, Jazz Kitchen, 5377 N. College Ave., $10, (317) 253-4900.

Fareed Haque has been a frequent visitor to the Jazz Kitchen as a solo performer and as part of combos including Garaj Mahal. This time around he's performing with his Flat Earth Ensemble. The group combines musical styles from many cultures with Hindustani violin and tabla, accompanying Haque's virtuoso guitar work.

10. Dorsey, Hey Hey Melodica, Noah East, The Last Domino
9 p.m., April 4, Melody Inn, 3826 N. Illinois St., $5, (317) 923-4707.

Thanks to bands and promoters working together, Indy has an energetic indie rock scene. A few of the bands benefiting from this cooperation get together for a show to kick off the weekend. Dorsey and Hey Hey Melodica both belong to the Independent Band Collective. The show is organized by 45 Little Revolutions, a promotions group that features local and touring acts.

The Glen Phillips show should be good, his collaborations with Sean Watkins are some of my favorite. And referring to the "supergroup" as being called the Scrolls is news to me. Everything I've seen so far just calls the "the as yet unnamed band".

Common should be awesome. He is so lyrical. like the true essence of hip-hop.

Damn!!!!! I'm gonna have to go to Common. I hope he doesn't try to get too political.

I'll be at Common tonight... have never seen him and am very much looking forward to it! Anyone know what sort of a lineup / format he's touring with? Should be an interesting night at Clowes!!

And thanks for the heads up about Fareed Haque - I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it, but for anyone reading who isn't familiar... check him and his excellent band out!! Top caliber musicians doing some really interesting things.
