In observance of National Poetry Month, a few upcoming events:

THURSDAY, APRIL 3

6:30 p.m. Free Minds Reading Series & Writers Workshop at Lockerbie Central United Methodist Church's Earth House, 237 N. East St., Indianapolis. DVD showing of Etheridge Knight. Free parking south of the church. For more information, call (317) 524-6951 or (317) 637-2716, or e-mail EK@EKFestival.org or visit www.ekfestival.org.

7 p.m.-9 p.m. Kafe Kuumba, an open-mic event, at The Good Life Bar & Grill, 2618 W. 16th St., Indianapolis. Free. Sponsor: Midtown Writers Association.

7 p.m.-9:30 p.m. In the Company of Shakespeare, An Evening of Poetry (open reading) at Lazy Daze Coffeehouse, 10 S. Johnson Ave., Indianapolis. Free. Every Thursday. 317-353-0777 or www.lazydazecoffeehouse.com. You're more likely to encounter the language of Gregory Corso rather than the Bard. It's a young, hip crowd that packs a coffeehouse annex. (Remember the old Lockerbie readings, anyone?)

10:30 p.m. Poetry slam at Skylight Hookah Lounge, 116 N. Third St., Lafayette. 765-429-8600. www.skylightcoffeehouse.com/showspage.htm. I've never managed to make it to this venue. Can anyone report on what to expect? Slammer, have you been here?

Is the open mic Claude & Annie's, 5162 Pike Plaza Road, still on?
