April is National Poetry Month and there are plenty of opportunities in Indy to celebrate. There are probably more venues hosting poetry readings in the city now than ever: coffee shops, bookstores, dive bars, libraries, universities, art galleries. Maybe you want to write poetry. Why not give it a shot? Buy a blank book. Now a blank book can be an intimidating thing. How do you start? Poetry is equated with profundity, right? Not necessarily. Poetry can be nonsensical. The thing is to get started. Start writing, if nothing else jot down the names and addresses of all the places you will go during April to listen to poetry and talk to poets. And maybe read some of your own poems out of that increasingly un-blank book. Buy a poetry anthology , there are hundreds available (I suggest starting with "The Outlaw Bible of American Poetry" if you're open to suggestion). Listen to recordings of great poets reading their work. www.poets.org has some audio and you can even purchase poetry ringtones. Keep your blank book with you at all times, you never know when inspiration might strike, it could come in the form of a stupid bumpersticker on the car in front of you, or from something you overhear as someone blathers loudly on their cell phone. Now click on the "search" box on the top of this page, just below the indy.com logo and write "poetry readings" and click "go". Then go, baby, go!

I've always loved my Moleskins if anyone's looking for a good starter book.
