He's certainly one of the great local icons of the last 30 years. I remember getting his autograph at a Pacers game when I was a kid. He appeared to be about 10 feet tall. Of course, I was considerably shorter then. I remember the shock of noticing that he wore dish-washing gloves with crayon or marker scrawled on them. They looked a lot scarier on television. I was reminded of Mr. Terry, because I saw he's making a couple of appearances at a horror convention this weekend:

If anyone else has any memories of the man, I'd be interested in reading them.
I remember waiting up for "Nightmare Theater", the house was dark, I was the only one up, and as soon as the theme music hit, I was terrified. In looking at clips on his website, it seems campy. But at the time, scary stuff. http://www.sammyterry.com/
Oh my gosh Sammy Terry....LOL I remember I was so scared of that man! My mom and stepfather knew him and they took me to their house...way out and he did the production downstairs in the basement of his home....they took me there to show me that everything was fake and that he wore make up and all of this stuff but it didn't do any good because as long as he laughed like that.....I was still terryfied!
Didn't he own a record store in town at one point? Does he still? It's been a few years since I heard that. Anyway, yeah, it's a shame that locally produced shows like that have been completely replaced by cookie-cutter syndication. Once upon a time, every region in the country had it's own version of things like Sammy Terry, Cowboy Bob and Janie. Not to mention local talk shows and variety shows and so on.
Actually, he owned a music store called "Family Music" on North Shadeland Avenue(fixed a French Horn I played in High School a long, long time ago). But, he generally didn't like it when you approached him as a Sammy Terry fan there. As far as he was concerned, Sammy Terry and Bob Carter of Family Music were two separate entities.
My elementary school librarian was his wife. Needless to say every halloween we stopped by their house!
