Aretha Franklin is out, and John Legend is in for the 10th annual Kroger Indy Jazz Fest.
Although festival organizers announced in February that the Queen of Soul would headline the event, Franklin's name is absent from the latest list of acts to perform June 13-15 at White River State Park's Military Park.
Joel Harrison, who puts together the Indy Jazz Fest lineup, said he learned of Franklin's changed plans -- and few additional details -- within the past two weeks.
"I received a call from (Franklin's) management saying that they regret she will be unable to appear," said Harrison, artistic director for the American Pianists Association, which manages the festival as a fundraiser.
Franklin's publicist, Gwendolyn Quinn, could not be reached for comment.
Harrison filled the festival's headlining slot by scheduling a June 14 appearance by five-time Grammy Award winner John Legend.
"I was looking at an array of artists, but I've wanted to get John Legend here for a couple of years," said Harrison, who unveiled the Indy Jazz Fest lineup Thursday at the Jazz Kitchen. "While we're sorry that Aretha won't be here, somehow things have a way of working out. I couldn't be happier."
Mainstream R&B singer Legend, 29, has recorded two platinum-selling albums: "Get Lifted" (2004) and "Once Again" (2006). Legend is scheduled to sing "America the Beautiful" Sunday as part of the 24th annual "Wrestlemania" pay-per-view event, as well as participate in the April 9 "Idol Gives Back" episode of Fox television series "American Idol."
The Indy Jazz Fest lineup also includes one of the storied names of Indianapolis jazz history, trumpet player Freddie Hubbard, making his festival debut. Hubbard, whose career includes signature recordings "Red Clay" and "First Light," was booked as part of the inaugural 1999 event, but no explanation was given when he didn't appear.
Harrison looked ahead to Hubbard's June 14 performance by calling it a celebration of the musician's 70th birthday. Hubbard will turn 70 on April 7.
Smooth jazz star Dave Koz and Latin jazz trumpet player Jerry Gonzalez also are scheduled to perform June 14.
On June 13, blues icon Buddy Guy will close opening-night festivities. On June 15, Indy Jazz Fest will serve as the local stop for the Legends of Jazz Tour presented by the AARP. The Legends lineup features smooth jazz quartet Fourplay, Cuban saxophone player Paquito D'Rivera and Chicago-based pianist Ramsey Lewis.
Musicians will perform on two stages in Military Park. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday.
Past performers at Indy Jazz Fest have included Tony Bennett, Sonny Rollins, Al Green, Herbie Hancock, Norah Jones and Dave Brubeck.
Tickets for the 2008 Kroger Indy Jazz Fest can be purchased be ginning at 10 a.m. Friday by visiting www.indyjazzfest.net or by calling (317) 940-8198. Single-day tickets will be available for $25. Three-day passes are $65.
Kroger stores will offer single-day tickets for $22 and three-day passes for $55 through April 30.
At the festival, single-day tickets will be sold for $25 on June 13, and for $35 on June 14 and 15.
Concerts are scheduled at Military Park, part of White River State Park at West and New York streets.

IndyJazzFest.net website not working???
I just wished they would have dropped Herbie Hancock in the mix....
Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, is not a jazz artist anyhow.
The Jazz Fest line-up for 2008 is the best we've had in years! Ramsey Lewis, Dave Koz, Freddie Hubbard with a mix of Buddy Guy, John Legend...say whaaat! This is bloody dynamic!!
Soooooo excited to see John Legend! Now I'm going for certain and I love Tad Robinson & Mike Mulligan (Indy favs!) and cannot wait to hear Freddie Hubbard. What a great lineup for 2008. Aretha, I really won't miss ya.
Great way to reach out to a slightly younger audience too. I'm there for John Legend for sure.
It's great that we get all these jazz legends, but what about all the wonderful local jazz musicians who used to be a big part of Jazz Fest. Their music should also be heard. It seems unfair that we host this wonderful festival each year but have decided to exclude the very people who work hard each day to keep jazz alive in our own city.
It's great that we get all these jazz legends, but what about all the wonderful ...
Local jazz musicians have always played a role in previous Jazz Fests and no doubt will continue to do so, but that doesn't mean they automatically should be included in the lineup. After all, they're LOCAL, and available to us year-round. At Jazz Fest, I appreciate being able to see acts I've only heard about.
John Legend? I can't wait. I've missed so many artists this year, I'll be there for sure.
Can not wait to see Tad Robinson...hope he is able to announce that he was the winner of the Male Vocalist or Album of the Year at this event! If you have not heard this guy, you have no idea what you are missing!!!
