Sometimes I find myself looking at the pictures at the Indianapolis Museum of Art but not really seeing everything. I mean, really using my vision. Maybe it has to do with trying to see so many paintings instead of just studying one. I decided to visit recently and look at only one painting. I chose Georges Braque's "Still Life with Pink Fish" (1937; oil on canvas). I decided to do some research about Braque, so I read a biography of the artist by Alex Danchev and looked through a well-illustrated monograph. I knew a little bit about Braque, mainly by reading about Picasso and the cubist years when they closely collaborated. Many consider Braque to be the "Third Man" of Modern Art, after Picasso and Matisse. But Braque surpassed them in some ways---his work adorns the ceiling of a gallery in the Louvre, for instance. The IMA's Braque is a classic example of his table top still lives: fruit, pitcher, dish, fish and wallpaper. So here's the thing to do: pick an artist represented in the IMA's collection, learn more about the artist and their work (the public library has a large collection of DVD documentaries on art) and then visit the IMA with one goal: to really look at a single painting by one artist. Look at it until you really see it. And talk about what you see.
