It may soon be time to roll out some new Indy.com features. Or at least start kicking some ideas around. So help us. One of the bigger, more nebulous ideas we have is adding 'groups' functionality. I don't want to taint the suggestions so I'm not even going to give examples of groups functionality but throw me some ideas of how you'd best use something like that on a site like indy.com. What's that look like? Are there good examples out there?
Thanks much all.
"Ask The Doberman" section. indy.com users have questions and The Doberman has answers. Some useful, some comedic, some downright worthless. BRILLIANT!

Tho actually a really good idea, doesn't help me with my 'groups' issue. Tell ya what, I'll make another post for 'Man, I wish we had this feature' ideas ...
I've moved my thoughts but, I like the "Ask the Doberman" feature too! ha
I'm guessing by groups you're referring more to a "subscription-style" feature? All fans of the Doberman's comedic high-stylings could coalesce into a group...all Indy foodies = another group, etc??? More private forum style than not.

Now you're talking sister.
Would the groups be user created or admin created? What about user created, invite only groups? Just throwing some ideas out there.

Right on, those're the questions I need to be asked. From the jump, I'd say that they need to be user created 'cause that's what the site is all about. But it may make sense to have some preset staff-created ones.
off the top freestylin here, but what about we need a video group to post what we did this week -places,concerts, sports ect. kinda a multi-media reality indy.com
I really like the idea of being able to upload videos (would be SUCH a great procrastination tool around 3 in the afternoon) I'm just wondering how that would work in terms of someone needing to police the site. I know nudity, profanity, etc. doesn't go over so well...
Just a bookkeeping request: I wish there were a way to bookmark the last comment you read so that you can quickly pick up where you left off, especially if haven't checked in for a couple of days.
Here's an idea...how about a "featured post" of some kind, where a particularly riveting post is chosen every day to get a spot in the top "featured" section of the site?

Sounds so obvious when you put it like that.
What else ya got?
I'm not a vegetarian, but it seems like it would be nice for people like vegetarians to be able to communicate with each other in a way to highlight veg-friendly restaurants, etc. So if groups would facilitate that kind of communication, I say yes! to groups. :)

Good idea on the veg-friendly - maybe also for folks with little people who aren't interested in the "moms" site (which can I just say is a bit sexist - oh, that's right, "parenting" sites only apply to women, right?), a group for parents.
Braden...i want a map...a map when you search in Dining for a restaurant on let's say the East side...not sure what I want to eat, but I know that I have to go somewhere close to work. That way, i can narrow it down from what is close by. Ya know what I'm sayin? Hope all is well! Miss you guys!
*spellcheck for posting and reviews
*a map would be great
*a way to bookmark restaurants/venues that we want to try in the future (similar to becoming a fan or something, but I don't really want to be a fan if I have never been...)

There is a spellcheck here. As you type, incorrectly spelled words are underlined in red.

Actually, I think this just means you are using Firefox. This has been discussed before, but it's not likely that the developers will implement spellcheck. Why? Firefox and Safari both already have a spell check feature. If you don't want to give Firefox a shot, which I strongly recommend over Internet Explorer, you can always download the following free Internet Explorer spellcheck add-on: ieSpell
As far as maps go, I agree, a large map to explore Indy's restaurants located on each side of the city would be a great addition. Remember though, that if you know of any restaurant that is in the area you want to explore, go to that restaurant's profile page and then look in the "What's Nearby" map that is under "Popular tags" the right side of the screen.
The bookmark thing would be a cool addition. In the meantime, you can always become a fan of the restaurant / venue temporarily, and then after you check them out, you can defan them if you decide you don't like them.
Status so I can be like RandyDaytona is [fill in the blank]

Hey, I'm just trying to help out... and I own a MacBook Pro and work on a Mac as well. So does the actor playing the PC guy on the Mac commercials though.
I do as well. Which is why I like things as user friendly as possible.

I heard him speaking on This American Life recently, he talked about how he went into a Mac store in Soho for a cable and the employees went into hysterics.

To clarify, I meant more of a "I found this person's post useful... or I agree that the creme brulee at Dunaways is fantastic." Just more interactivity when it comes to reviews..
I agree a map would be helpful. And more interactivity when it comes to reviews. A way to go look at pictures by themselves.
I started trying to build a Indy music venue Google map a year ago, and forgot about it. Anyone want to work on it, let me know.

How about a video game section? We have tv/celebrities and movies already, but some of us are gamers on here I am sure and this way we could communicate the latest games that rule or suck and share gamertags via xbox live if we want.
Also a media sharing section, like if a band has a new song they want to debut, and people that don't care for myspace could download it directly from the artist themselves?
And I like the idea about uploading video too.
