Is it horror, or psychological thriller?

Sure, it was scary as hell, but the heart and soul of "Jaws" was the interactions of these three guys.

The Silence of the Lambs

I'm listening to a movie podcast right now I downloaded from iTunes called "Movies You Should See," and the topic of conversation is "Psycho."

The chaps (yes, they're Brits) who host the show are debating whether "Psycho" is a horror film or a suspense/thriller.

A couple of guys argue that while it has scary moments (i.e. the shower scene), in essence it's a psychological thriller.

Others argue that Mrs. Bates is the antagonist of the film (a terrific argument given the film's famous twist ending), and Norman is the protagonist, but that Mrs. Bates is a true horror symbol as a knife-wielding killer.

We've touched on this in other threads with films like "Jaws" (which is steadfastly maintain is a character-driven drama with some scary moments), and also "Silence of the Lambs" (an atmospheric and moody psychological thriller in its own right). My position is the same on "Psycho," that it's not really a horror movie, though it has some scary moments (and for my money, the scariest moment in "Psycho" is the part when Mrs. Bates/Norman kills the investigator at the top of the stairs).

What do you think? Can you think of other films that are 'tweeners that we can debate in this way?
