As the weather warms up, the local concert season hits full swing. I'd like to take a moment to look back on the best concerts we have all seen. Mine would be AC/DC several years ago at Conseco and Robert Randolph and the Family Band at a Tent Party before the Final Four. Also, feel free to let us know which concerts you would like to see coming up. I would love to see Clapton this time around.
This is too hard of a question to actually pin point one or even 10 show's. Recently, Ryan Adams and the Cardinals at the Murat sticks out to me as well as Ben Harper at the Murat, even though he was promoting his new album and played mostly tunes from that. But, that is what they do and it was still pretty electric.
I've been to a ton of different shows that feature different crowds, music, artists and people. I think anyone who answers to this thread could say the same. These shows are just a few that really stick out to me, in no particular order.
Ben Harper w/Jack Johnson in 2003(i think) - It was GA at Deer Creek and he played really late, almost 12:30 ish. He just kept going and going.
Farm Aid - 2001, the energy of the day was pretty awesome. It was only two weeks after 9/11. Plus, Neil, Willie, Dave, John... hard to go wrong
DMB 2005, I've been to MANY of these shows and have been "dave head" forever. I catch a lot of Sh*t for it, but i could care less. In 2005 we scored front row seats for the second night through the Warehouse. Robert Randolph and the Family band was the opener and he came back out and played several tunes with DMB. It was a pretty unique experience.
Good topic...But I sure couldn't narrow it down to one.
Roger Waters at Deer Creek (yes, Deer Creek) a couple of summers ago was phenomenal. Even bad Grateful Dead shows are magical. CSNY's Free Speech tour was fab. Oh, and the Fleetwood Mac Reunion ('03, with the Rumors band) was pretty cool, too ~ the Stevie Nicks/Lindsey Buckingham combination is haunting. A regret, though: I still lament missing Dylan at White River last year ~ I want to hear him do "Tangled Up in Blue" at least once before he croaks.
Tool on shrooms at the Newport Music Hall in 1996 with Maynard painted blue from head to toe.
The Eagles "Hell Freezes Over Tour"(and most of their tours since then). The Eagles had broken up while I was in high school(I'm old you do the math..haha) and I figured that I would never see them live when whalaa out of the blue.."they made up"
The Genesis Reunion Tour this past September...although Peter Gabriel was absent just having the rest of them up on the stage together absolutely rocked my world...
The Rolling Stones @ Churchill Downs(in the rain/cold even)..I'd seen The Stones before, but it must have been the legendary venue that made this one so special..
Bob Seger @ Market Square in 96(2006/2007 shows were awesome too)..I was in the 4th row on the floor and that really made this show special...wish I'd had a camera with me..
Phil Collins First Final farewell Tour...I was 10th row dead center but I would have loved the show even from the rafters..
I could go on and on but you get the picture...I LOVE my music and especially the LIVE show...
Oh wait I must mention Tommy Shaw/Jack Blades show @ the Music Mill a few months ago...solo acoustic/old cover songs...it was magical...
MSA...Winter of 1985 or 1986. Bob Dylan w/Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Smaller show...the drapes were down over the upper seats (some geezers may remember that practice). This was during the Traveling Wilburys days. Solo Dylan, Solo Tom, Dylan backed by the H'breakers, Petty backed by the H'Breakers, and everyone playing together.
I'm a huge E Streeter, so several Springsteen shows.
DMB has been a favorite in recent years.
I can't say that I've seen a "bad" show by any of these acts. They're three tight bands that know how to play.
Best concerts in the last year: Sufjan Stevens at the Murat and Polyphonic Spree at the Vogue. I wanted to quit my job and follow each group after their wonderful shows!
Michael Bolton. I'll be honest with you, I love his music. I do. I'm a Michael Bolton fan. For my money, I don't know if it gets any better than when he sings "When a Man Loves a Woman".
Just kidding. Probably DMB. I went to see Bush/No Doubt/the Goo Goo Dolls in Bloomington in '95 and that one was pretty good too.
Michael Bolton. I'll be honest with you, I love his music. I do. I'm a ...
You got me. I was all like, "Dude, Joe's a Michael Bolton fan. I am never going to be able to take his movie reviews seriously again."
Best concert in recent memory for me was Sigur Ros at the Murat Theatre a couple of years ago. A religious experience.
Polyphonic Spree at the Vogue last year was great, too.
The Flaming Lips have never failed to rock the party that rocks the body, either.
a few that come to mind......i know i'm forgetting a lot... robert pollard @ the bluebird in nov. 06 man man @ opolis (oklahoma city) last year. small club, insanely packed, no A/C. energy through the roof. silver jews @ 40 watt (athens) a couple years back. their first show on their first tour.
cerberus shoal @ the firehouse (n. manchester) in 05. maybe the most far-out performance i've ever witnessed.
You got me. I was all like, "Dude, Joe's a Michael Bolton fan. I am ...
I know. I almost didn't do that for fear of losing all credibility, but I thought "you just gotta do it."
I will own up to liking Hootie and the Blowfish, though. I have gone to their last two concerts at RibAmerica. Sorry, I just like their music.
Pearl Jam's 10th Anniversary Concert in Las Vegas was my number 2 concert of all-time and my number 1 sober concert of all-time.
TIE between The Who at Deer Creek and The Roots at 8 Second Salon.
Flaming Lips at the Buskirk Chumley in Bloomington, Easter 2001. BEST SHOW EVER. For those of you that have seen their later shows at the Murat or the Vogue, I'm sorry, but it just wasn't the same.
I don't think I've ever felt as happy to be alive as that evening.
I saw the Flaming Lips in 1995 at the Patio. About 20 people in attendance. It was a fantastic night.
TIE between The Who at Deer Creek and The Roots at 8 Second Salon.
Did Robert Plant open for them(the who)? I was there if this is the same show. It was pretty decent
King Crimson about 6 years ago at the Murat was a heck of a show. They played as a four piece with John Paul Jones opening. Another great show was Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, Roy Hargrove, John Patittucci and Brian Blade playing Miles and Coltrane tunes at Butler, also about 6 years ago. 2 of my favorite shows.
Michael Buble was my best concert! I have been to concerts ranging from the Righteous Brothers to Green Day but Buble was so much better. He really puts on a show (the live is much better than the cd's) and remembers where he came from. He will be in Indy in April and I suggest to all to check him out!
Bob Dylan and the Foo Fighters at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Dylan was everything I had expected. Prince on N.Y.E. 2000. The combo of 3 Nine Inch Nails shows in 4 days in Chicago, Milwaukee and Indianapolis (My first intro to Indy.) 3 Tool shows in 4 days in Ft. Worth, Shreveport, and Oklahoma City. Something about getting to go to several shows back to back makes it even better. Foo Fighters in Dallas this year. Nine Inch Nails at the Woodlands in 2006. TV On the Radio at First Ave. Queens of the Stone Age in Dallas last September. I hope to finally see Buddy Guy live at the JazzFest this year.
It is hard to come up with one. I would have to start with the 94 Woodstock. The sheer magnitude of bands were incredible. I would say though that Nine Inch Nails followed by Metallica(long hair head banging still rocking) and then closed by Aerosmith on the Saturady was amazing. The Green Day mud fight was a riot and then Peter Gabriel closing the whole festival wow.
Best Jam: Bonnaroo last year seeing John Paul Jones, Ben Harper and the drummer from the Roots jamming into the wee hours was very special.
Best Band: My Morning Jacket at Clowes and also at Bonnaroo in 06. Cannot leave out the coutless Pearl Jam shows. Both are their to put on a Rock show.
Best Solo: Xavier Rudd at Bonnaroo 07 and the Vougue. Incredible one man band. It's like a one man techno jam.
How could you pick just one? I know it is impossible for me because all meant a little something different.
Either Living Colour at Clowes in 1989 or
Willie Nelson at the Vogue in 2004 or
Phish at the Murat in 1994 or
Faith No More / Soundgarden / Voivod at the Ritz in 1991 or
Nine Inch Nails at the Pepsi Coliseum in 1997 or 1998, I think
Radiohead in '03 at Blossom Music Center. Radiohead live is awe-inspiring. Indy is on the list for the second US leg of their summer tour.
I second DMB night two at Deer Creek in '05. DMB + Robert Randolph + thunderstorm = one of the best concert atmospheres I've experienced.
And I don't care what you think about the band, but Better Than Ezra puts on a killer show. Their show at the Vogue a couple years ago, when Peyton Manning showed up after a win earlier that day in Tampa, is near the top of my list.
Bush and Goo Goo Dolls in Detroit MI. It was like 1997. I was right up in front in the "mosh pit." I'm looking forward to changing this answer when I see Eric Clapton in May though!
Pink Floyd, Summer of '95--what a trip!!!!
Rage Against the Machine.. August 07, Alpine Valley Wisconsin. It was a 6 hour trip for the best show i have ever been to. It rained almost the entire show and the hill turned into a giant mudslide. It was so bad you could not even keep your footing, we were covered in mud from head to toe. The band was of course; Amazing and the fact that this was thier only none-festival show made it even more exciting. If they tour agian i will have front row! Best concert ever!!
Any of the O.A.R shows are phenomenal. Jimmy Buffett is always a great time as well. But in all honesty, I remember being at the first X-Fest in 1995 when Bush was the headlining act and seeing Weezer perform right after the release of their blue album and was just in awe on how great that performance was. That concert is what sticks out in my mind the most
Three MSA shows -- the Who, 1982 (first "farewell" tour); and Clapton and Mellencamp, both '92; two mid-90s shows at the Vogue -- Buddy Guy and Tori Amos; and the Allman Brothers at Deer Creek, mid-90s.
Even without Keith Moon, the Who unleashed a rockin' show for the ages. Clapton was riding the interest of his "Unplugged" album and setting the groundwork for his blues-tribute "From the Cradle" CD; Mellencamp was rocking hard in the USA like always, promoting "Whenever We Wanted"; Amos had just released her auspicious "Little Earthquakes" debut, movingly converting those chilling, haunting piano-backed studio recordings to a cozy concert setting; Guy's blues-thumping grooves had many, many folks in the crowd in a dancing frenzy; and two decades after their landmark Fillmore East concert, the regrouped Allmans delivered a splendidly high-octane and satisfying performance. Just this afternoon, I listened to the exquisite "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" on the car stereo, thinking back to that show at Deer Creek ... and recalling the dual-guitar explosion resounding through the night air ...
A performer I would have loved to have seen: Stevie Ray Vaughan.
I'd have to Sharon Jones and the DapKings! This was the show of all shows for me. I don't really get star struck and especially since I perform myself now, it takes a lot for me to get really excited about a show! But I'll tell you what that woman has this presence about her, that it seems like she's larger than her 5 ft frame. Then you add the DapKings, who have gotten most of their fame with Amy Winehouse. Yet Sharon is the true vocalist for the band. True soul and funk at its best! I can honestly say that I felt like the happiest person on earth that night and I thank them so much for that!
Black Sabbath - original line up, Sepultura, Tenacious D, Gwar
Tool on shrooms at the Newport Music Hall in 1996 with Maynard painted blue from ...
I was there
Best show ever - literally accidentally stumbling upon Charlie Watts drumming with his jazz tintet at Ronnie Scotts in London
Rage Against the Machine.. August 07, Alpine Valley Wisconsin. It was a 6 hour trip ...
that show was AMAZING!!!!!!! we went up for that, hit a bears game in chicago the next day, then went back up for dmb on sunday. what a weekend! im going to one up that one this summer though!
Best concert I've seen is Nine Inch Nails, hands down. It was '07 at Milwaukee. The NIN online fan club got front row seats, we ended up 3 rows back center stage.
Best Local Stageshow: Crambone
Best Cover Bands: No Remose or Those Meddlin Kids
Best Original Band: Lot 39
Check out some of those local bands if you get bored on a Friday or Saturday night. You won't be sorry.
Radiohead in Boston. Without doubt. And with that in mind, I'd like to point out that I have two spare lawn tickets I need to offload for their August 3 show in Indy. If anyone's interested, message me through the guestbook.
(Oh, and as a 16-year-old, the sheer spectacle of U2 on the Zoo TV tour was something to behold. You can give them crap for their power ballads and over-ratedness, but they really, really, really put a lot of effort into their shows. I think the tour required something like 50 semi-trailers worth of set-up. They had cars "hanging" from the stage. Impressive.)
I've seen some pretty big names front row on the second stage at XFest over the years before they were famous. Second stage at festivals is almost always a better experience.
A few of the best that I've seen: Eric Johnson w/ Adrian Legg opening @ The Moon in Tallahassee, FL. There was also The Floyd in Tampa on the Division Bell tour and Rush's Roll the Bones show in Pensacola, FL w/ Primus. The G3 tour in Pensacola, FL w/ Vai, Satriani and Malmsteen also rocked! Ooh...almost forgot Tomahawk @ HOB New Orleans w/ the Melvins and Dalek. Gotta love Mike Patton.
I guess Lollapalooza back in like '96. Sound Garden, Metallica, The Ramones, Rancid and a bunch more.
Metallica was worth the price of admission, they put on a damn good show. I'm not really into any of those bands anymore, but at the time it was an awesome concert.
I'd have to get out the ticket stub collection to refresh my faded memory, but here are some off the top of my head ...
Deer Creek used to do 'carload shows' where your entire carload of people got in for $20. I remember one carload show lineup included Stevie Ray Vaughn. That was a wild night.
Jane's Addiction at Deer Creek. They turned the place into a riot.
Tom Petty, the year that he had the huge psychedelic tree onstage. That was a fantastic concert experience.
Neil Young/Sonic Youth. Nuff said.
Dread Zeppelin at the Arlington Theater. This is not a joke band! They absolutely rocked!
David Byrne put on a hell of a show at the Vogue a few years back.
Even though we had absolutely THE WORST seats in the house, I am so glad I got to see Tom Waits at the Palace Theater in Louisville. If you've never been to that place, you need to go.
Funkadelic at the Murat Theater, 1992. Possibly the winner for my BEST concert ever. My mind was thouroughly blown, I know that much.
And, all you haters can hate all you want, but Phish at Big Cypress for the Millenium was the greatest party on earth that night. No joke. The setup was great, the band played great, and it went all night long. Literally.
I think my vote goes to a Lollapalooza show too. I think it was 2 years ago...maybe? But I got to see Nickel Creek, The Flaming Lips, Wilco, Gnarls Barkley, Feist, Iron & Wine, Death Cab for Cutie, and Nada Surf and many others that I can't recall at the moment, all in one weekend.
Jimmy Buffett at Verizon a few years ago was the absolute best EVER! Probably a big reason why was my wife took me to Key West the next morning to continue the vibe.
Queen - obviously a number of years ago!
1974 - Ozark Music Festival, MO State Fairgrounds, Sedalia, MO. Three days of hot sun and great tunes in 100 degree heat with 80,000 of my closest friends. We hung out with some Alabama bikers who told us about this kick a** band they saw the month prior in Huntsville that we would really like. Anyway, the stars and bars flag dropped, the lights came on, and Lynyrd Skynyrd (originals) played amazing rock & roll for two hours. It's been downhill ever since.
Paul Weller - December 1991 - The Ritz NYC. The not then crowned Modfather was fresh off disbanding The Style Council and long past breaking up The Jam. He was discovering his solo sound and testing out new joints from his first solo album. It was an amazing, soulful, incredible performance. The date for the show was my mom, and I remember being horrified when some British ex-pat offered her a spliff. The nerve of some folk!!
Hands down, no question: Rockapella. Sixth grade.
1976 Ted Nugent and Uriah Heap at Hara Arena in Dayton. I have seen a lot of concerts but this was by far the best rock show I have ever seen. Uriah Heep was the second act and blew everyone away.
