I wanted to post a review of this marvelous Chinese joint fixed at the corner of 38th and Franklin Road, and noticed there were no reviews of the place! The place is an institution and has been there FOREVER. The neighborhood isn't what it once was, but the food there is still spectacular.

The egg rolls are simply the best I have EVER had, a big greasy brick of fried cabbage, pork and shrimp, and their pork fried rice is also incredibly good.

Can someone get a review up of the place? It's old fashioned as can be inside--I don't think it's been updated since the 1970s, and the cash register they use is the same one they had when I visited when I was a kid, and looks like a register from the 1950s.

I grew up with the family that owns that place. In fact, I grew up in that neighborhood back behind the shopping center. I'm glad to see that place still in business. Anyone that has grown up on the east side knows that it's a hell of a lot different now than it was then. Nice to see it's still there.

My grandparents owned the house directly behind the restaurant, and I lived with them off and on for much of my childhood. That's how I know the place so well.

I lived down on the corner just off of 38th street.

I grew up around that area, and have eaten there for as long as i can remember. The food there is awesome!! Try the Beef Egg Foo Young. Yes, the egg rolls are great! I drive across town just to eat there. I won't eat chinese food anywhere else. :-)

Another east sider! That rocks. I've had just about everything they've got on their menu. It REALLY is probably the best chinese food in town.

If you tell me it has Won Ton Soup that is not the chicken broth and soggy dumpling with "mystery meat" inside one gets everywhere now, I will run, not walk. Whatever happened to the fresh spinach and roasted pork strips that made Won Ton soup so special and delicious?

Sorry to tell you folks, but most of the food in Hong Kong Inn is Americanized. Don't jump on my case because I'm just telling it like it is. How do I know that the food is Americanized? I'm Chinese and my folks used to be in the restaurant business. Want some real Chinese food? Come over to my Mom's house.

I grew up with the family that owns Hong Kong Inn. Their Grandma to my knowledge, never learned the english language and ALWAYS cooked authentic Chinese stuff. I would get Chinese Chinese food at their house and then American Chinese food at their place of business. Good food all around.

I think the daughters used to live in the house next door to my grandparents' house, and for some reason I hung out with them when I was young (maybe 5 or 6). I vividly remember going over there to show them my new Lone Ranger Halloween costume one year and not understanding a word they said to me. I think they run the restauraunt now (at least the woman at the front counter seems to be in her 40s or early 50s and would be the right age to be one of them).

You hit the nail right on the head. The real Chinese food was always prepared right at home. The American Chinese food was cooked at the restaurant.
