Here's the word from Ron Keedy at Key Cinemas, the independent art cinema on the city's Southside:

Locally owned and operated Key Cinemas, best known for off-the-wall films and support of locally produced independent filmmakers, has made the decision to condense its hours of operation to Friday-Saturday-Sunday and Wednesdays each week.

Citing rising gas prices, the economy and cost of heating/cooling such a huge space, owner Ron Keedy is trying to cut costs and still be convenient to as many filmgoers as possible.

"As much as I would like to be open on a full schedule," Keedy said, "it's not viable to run a show and heat/cool our building hour after hour for one or two admissions at a time. We've tried several combinations of days and times and I have chosen a schedule, using our statistics from the past 9 years, when the most patrons attend our films; realizing not all filmgoers can attend at all times. In order to continue bringing Indianapolis the type of films they're asking for, I'm hoping other fans of our films will be able to adjust."

Sucks he has to do this, but at least he is looking for options and not just throwing in the towel.....good for him, go and support this place, I love this theater, it has such a "Grindhouse" feel.

Long live Key Cinema!

It's amazing that Key Cinemas, as a small independent, has hung on as long as it has. That speaks to the dedication of the owner. If downsizing the schedule is a must, Ron Keedy's business plan sounds reasonable to me. As an occasional Key Cinemas patron, I have only attended on the days of the week he plans to stay open.

First Hollywood Bar & Film Works and now, THIS? I would rather go to one of these kind of places than the WAY more expensive multi-plexes that are out there.

We too only have gone there on a Friday or on the weekend. It is a bit of a drive to get down there but we are so grateful that it is going to hang in there. We have really enjoyed the oldies that they sometimes show like Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton.

bummer of the day, this is.

Well, at least Indy still has the Art House at the Keystone Mall by 86th, or has that gone out of business now?

Ive never been to Key Cinemas but I have been a regular at the renovated neighborhood theatres in such places as Louisville (The Vogue) and Toronto in my travels as a Hoosier. These old style theatres are great places to experience the past and the present.

I still remember watching "The Maltese Falcon" once upon a time and noticing how much I had missed when I caught this flick on tv. In one scene I could see the Empire State Building through an open window. It adds so much more to these older movies to watch them on the large screen. Not only the old movies, but the modern classics, such as "Young Frankenstein" can be fully enjoyed only on the large screen. Also, for the independent film makers where else is there for them to display their wares to the public??? So in conclusion, just let me say that all of you should give this place a chance and try it at least once. I got drug to my first screening at a similar place and I fell in love with it.

The Keystone Art Cinema is still truckin' along, though it's a chain too and has Mark Cuban and George Clooney's pocketbooks behind it (they own the chain). Ron's operation is a true independent deal. I've been there a few times, too. It's a GREAT place to watch a movie. I'd especially recommend watching one of those older films people have been talking about on here.
