The music video for Yo La Tengo's song "Sugarcube" is the funniest indie rock music video I have ever seen. Directed by Phil Morrison, it features the talents of Mr. Show comedy heroes David Cross and Bob Odenkirk. The premise of the video is this: Yo La Tengo submit a lo-fi music video for their latest single but the label hates it and decides to send the band to Rock School so that they can learn to be a real rock band. Their teachers are Odenkirk (as a pipe smoking professor in Kiss make-up) and Cross (pink-wigged hairmetal lecturer). Lessons include hotel room trashing, dramatic readings of Rush lyrics and a point-by-point analysis of "The Foghat Principle". Check it out for yourself here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDgpQBaziy0 and if you can come up with a contender for the title of "The Funniest Indie Rock Music Video" let us know.
not to mention it's a great song on (i would argue) their best record.

I would second that argument. One of the 20 best records of the '90s. Maybe one of the ten best.
Oh and David Cross has a habit of contributing to funny rock videos. Like this one by the New Pornographers.
Thank you for this. I'm a big fan of David and Bob, but had no idea about this video. I don't know if this is a contender, as it's more weird than funny, but I find myself going back to the Animal Collective - Peacebone video:

YLT is awesome! They just opened for My Morning Jacket at south by southwest. kick arse!
Speaking of Yo La Tengo, has anybody ever seen the movie "Old Joy"? Yo La Tengo did the soundtrack for it. It looked like my kind of movie, but I never got around to seeing it.

Yes. That movie's a '90s indie rock fan's wet dream: Yo La Tengo soundtrack, Will Oldham in a major role.
It's actually a really good movie. A road trip flick with some Jim Jarmusch influence, but with more heart than most of his movies.
