The Hives are a rock band from Fagersta, Sweden that first rose to prominence in the early 2000s as a leading group of the garage rock revival, playing punk-influenced garage rock. Their breakthrough came with the release of the "best-of" compilation Your New Favourite Band, featuring their most commercially successful song "Hate to Say I Told You So". The Hives are known for their "hilarious self-glorification," and performing in matching suits that change with each album, but are always black and white.
The Hives live show has been highly rated - Spin magazine rating them 8th best in rock music. In concert vocalist Pelle Almqvist and his guitarist brother Nicholaus Arson handle showmanship while the other members attend to musical business. Pelle is known for his "colourful idiocy" - stage diving, scissor kicks, climbing amps, and eschewing false modesty with pronouncements such as "I've been busy being fantastic."
Another appeal to the audience:
Pelle: "I'm out of control! Tell me to take it easy!" Crowd: "Take it easy!" Pelle: "No, I wooon't!"Seriously folks, check it out yourselves at The Vogue on May 17th... tickets are available at TicketMaster and at The Vogue box office.
Countdown to May 17th sounds like: "Tick....tick....tick...BOOOM!!!"
this band is still together!? oh that's hilarious. speaking of which, The Vines are apparently back together, as well. they were in Austin. maybe they can open for these guys.
this band is still together!? oh that's hilarious. speaking of which, The Vines are apparently ...
Of course The Hives are still together. They just released an album in the past few months ("The Black & White Album" ... and it's very good).
They've been pretty consistent on album releases as well (every year and a half or so).
i know dude. that was my sarcastic way of saying that this band is no longer relevant to me. HATE TO SAY I TOLD YOU SO... i just love reminiscing about all of the over-hyped NME bands that quietly went away from the limelight after the people that hyped them up so much shut their mouths. do you recall that The Vines were here to change the world of music as we knew it according to NME? um, yeah. still love The Strokes though.
Eh ... I don't think it's the Hives' fault that the Vines aren't any good. I think this is a great booking at a great room at a nice price ($18.50).
like i said, each person has and is entitled to their own opinion. mine is that The Hives are terrible and that they were one hit wonders. their last album (was it called Tyrannosaurus Rex?) was an abomination to garage rock. and honestly, i think The Vines are actually better than The Hives. at least they had more than one tune.
Blind Melon at The Vogue was a great booking at a "mediocre" room at a nice price. Silversun Pickups the same. This would've been a nice booking 4 years ago. But I guess ticket sales will determine just how wrong I can be. Lord knows I don't understand this town.
Doughty at Music Mill on the other is a nice booking at a nice room for a nice price.
HA HA HA HA HA! This is awesome. Will they be joined by The Mooney Suzuki? Will Mudhoney be touring through as well!?
I'm just playing. I did like that "Hate To Say I Told You Song." Catchy.
The Vogue far outclasses the sterile, strip mall-bound Music Mill as a live rock music venue. But hey, everybody's entitled to their own opinion.
Matty, I believe the lead singer of Blind Melon sarcastically said it best as he was ending the show on Saturday night and walking off the stage... "Get ready for some dance music." The fact that the band had to play an 8:00 show on a Saturday night so the venue could have its "dance night" was pathetic. I'll take class over capacity any day but that's just me. I like the Music Mill room. I might be in the minority but I think it's a solid concert hall with good sound. I have had some good times at The Vogue but just think it's a so-so place. And isn't everything here in a strip mall? That's no argument.
While I'll never defend the Hives (hey, at least they're an above-average garage act with some staying power) as anything special; they've gotta be miles beyond the re-heated Blind Melon nostalgia grab. And to choose between the Mill & the Vogue.....I'd rather have a basement stage and a keg. And I'm not too into those.
The Mill has fine sound. Aesthetically, it's lacking. If you want to use the commentary of visiting musicians as a barometer, I can promise you that far more have made fun of the Music Mill's former status as a Gymboree located in the middle of lame, suburban urban sprawl than have complained about the Vogue having a Friday night dance party.
Oh, and it might be easier to take your criticism of the Hives seriously if you didn't just pay to see Blind Melon. I know the bumblebee girl was cute, but seriously.
AAAAARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! am I the only one who likes Blind Melon!? AAAAARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you know what's worse than me liking Blind Melon is that I actually think this new singer is better than Shannon. that's disgraceful. this kid is so f'ing good it hurts.
that Gymboree quip is a LOW BLOW! a funny blow but a low one nonetheless. i have a feeling the only bands that know about that are the ones you and Lindquist interview and tell. on the other hand, when a band asks why they're going on at 8:00 on a Saturday and the venue tells them it's because of dance night starting at 11:00 well...
DREWNOW - you gotta live with what you've got and for now, the only choices for shows of this size are the Mill, Vogue and Egyptian Room so what can you do? I feel like i'm at a Bar Mitzvah party at the Egyptian and i'm waiting for retro rewind to break out every time i'm at The Vogue, therefore The Mill is the lesser of the evils (althought I personally like the place).
it's all good though. i'm sure any day now the House of Blues is coming to town!
Doberman: You've been assailed and still maintained the high road. Good showing, and this Hives date has received a lot of attention (which it deserves).
Pretty soon The Irving will be renovated and re-opened, an all-ages venue that holds 1,000 with beer and wine for those 21+.
And yes, David, I personally am happy this Hives show has already garnered lots of attention... and ticket sales.
The Irving's going all ages plus alcohol? Now that's something to talk about. That's exactly what this city needs. Indiana liquor laws truly have hurt the concerts that come here in my opinion. No joke. It will be interesting to see what shows they can bring in.
Should be awesome, looking at being open at least 3 days a week.
I am VERY excited for this show, big Hives fan here, and have been waiting to see them and was hoping they were going to be at the Vogue, YEAH the Concert gods have came through......THANK YOU to whomever booked this show.
I might have to check them out. I haven't been to The Voque since the proper attire became Thug Life a few years ago. The Hives are one of my favorite bands.

THUG LIFE! That was a funny post.
Mr. A-Squared -
As always it's fun to see you and your gal ... I heart you both so. And I am going to this show. My friend Eric got me on the list, plus one. Which of the A's wants to go with me?
