Is anyone on here familiar with podcasts? There are a few that I listen to and admire, but I'm not sure what exactly goes in to it. My friend and I who are both already too busy to be taking on any new projects were thinking about collaborating on a podcast. We're already kicking around names for it and thinking of our 2 loyal friends who might actually listen. Should the podcast have an ongoing theme, or should it be something that gets switched up each week? Should we skip the theme all together and just throw something together each time?

different each week, but with recurring themes... like corn, for example!

Unless you're doing it just for friends, a common theme might be helpful to draw listeners in. People are more likely to come back if they have a general idea of what they're going to get. It's also helpful to have at least a loose outline of each show done before you start recording.

Would it be too shameless to plug my book ("Expert Podcasting Practices For Dummies," Wiley Publishing) here? :)

Definitely themed if you want repeat listeners. And plug it on indy.com daily! :)

I agree that, in general, it's best to have a "theme" in order to have repeat listeners. People are looking for something that meets their interests, whether it be cooking, politics, sports, travel, etc. However, I have heard podcasts that are just sort of improvised discussion that come off quite well. My personal favorite is the Ricky Gervais Show (writer/director of the British version of The Office). But the show's entertainment value hinges largely on the imbecilic ideas and thoughts of co-host Karl Pilkington. I would highly recommend it for anyone who needs a good laugh.
