The word from the Indiana Arts Commision is that selection of the next Indiana poet laureate, to succeed Joyce Brinkman, is winding down.
According to Rex A. Van Sant, director of marketing and communication for the IAC, two poets are being considered for the post of Indiana poet laureate. On Friday (March 14), he declined to provide specific details, instead deferring to Susan Britsch, the IAC liasion to the nine-member selection committee. She will not be available to answer questions until Monday (March 17).
So, knowing that the selection committee is made up of university representatives, who do you think will be named? The names I keep hearing are Marianne Boruch, Norbert Krapf and Mari Evans, but really, it's anyone's guess.
UPDATE: According to Rex A. Van Sant, director of marketing and communication for the IAC, interviews with the two finalists will take place later this month (March). A recommedantion probably will be determined in April or May and will be presented to the full commission for review and approval at its June meeting.
Nope, keep guessing.
I would like to see Mari Evans get it. She, by far, has had the most influence on Hoosier poets that I've seen. It would be a good thing to see her get back out in the public again. Also, as far as teaching the children of this fair state about poetry, I don't know who would be better qualified.
