Sick of hearing about how anyone under 35 doesn't care about making their community better? Me, too!

A friend sent me information about a new organization, Giving Sum, "targeting the next generation of givers with the purpose to inspire, engage, and educate young professionals in philanthropy and to have lots of fun along the way." Basically, it's a group of people who work together to give to local organizations, with both time and money, while networking.

I work in the nonprofit world, so this seems like a great idea to me - what do you think? What are you doing or do you want to do to make Indianapolis a better place to be?

i work for a non-profit as well, but when it comes to interpersonal change, i aggressively argue the others views are either un-founded slop or ignorant gobel-dey guk.......in the nicest way possible of course.

I volunteer for local charities or events that I believe in. I've helped the Breast Cancer Foundation with their silent auction, donated time to Gleaners, and volunteered at the Stutz. Once I ran a charity 5k. I give money to charity organizations that I believe in. I do as much as I can with what I have essentially.

I feel that I also do as much as I can with what I have... which unfortunately right now is not a lot (at least money wise). I do like to volunteer for worthy causes, give blood, things of that sort. I was really in to Habitat for Humanity when I was in college, I'd like to get back into that.

My main cause right now is the environment, we are trying to green up our house as much as possible... recylce, reuse, etc. I really like the reusable shopping bags (I'm actually looking at a compact one for my purse right now) and I am trying to use only natural household cleaners. I also try to buy fair trade (esp coffee and chocolate) and organic products when I can, social justice is also very important to me.

I'll have to check the group out, thanks for the info!

The other cool thing about the group (which does involve money for membership) is that groups can join us one member, from what I understand. If you can, you should check out the April 1 event. I'll be there, seeing what I can see.

I just recently started volunteering with FirstBook. The organization just started in Indy. The program gives grants to non-profits, after school programs, etc as long as 80% of the kids they serve are low-income. Then we sponsor each of the kids in the program for 6 months-1 year and provide them with a new book each month that they get to take home. If anybody wants to get involved were just starting to get the program off the ground. You can check it out at http://www.firstbook.org/site/c.mhLRJ3PMKsG/b.3632071/. We're also on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=7779304828

I like volunteering time, sometimes the money thing just gets to me. So many companies asking for money and it doesnt seem like they use it properly. I think donating time is just as good as donating money.

I think that something like this sounds great! Thanks for putting it up! While there are alot of "young professional" organizations out there here in town, this one seems like it is focused on the community as well. I do give money to charities, but it would be cool to have a say in where that money goes. I like it! Thanks again!
