As is clear from the bounty of dining reviews here at indy.com, eating out is one of life's great joys.
But how often do you cook at home? Is it something you really like, or just something to save some cash?
If you're a happy home cook, what's the last thing that you cooked for dinner and loved?
I love to cook at home as much as I love to eat out. For me, eating out is more of a treat or indulgence, I tend to eat out maybe once a week (if not every other). I am a vegetarian, so I don't ever really eat fast food (except for the occasional late night cheesy been and rice burrito).
Playing around with recipes to make them your own is one of my favorite things. Playing with different textures, seasonings, spices, and cheeses can make a dish great and truely your own. Esp being a veggie head, I like to take a traditionally meat filled dish and make it meat free.
Probably the best thing that I cooked last was mexican lasagna. I used tortillas instead of noodles, and layered those with a mixture of fake meat, corn, black beans, stewed tomatoes, onions, cheese and lots of spices. Other favorites to make include eggplant parm, roasted red pepper fettucini, and variations on grilled veggie sandwiches or wraps... mmmm!
I cook at home a few days a week, and go out to eat once or twice a week. When I'm not cooking or eating out I generally just snack for dinner. I like everything that I cook. :) I made some tacos the other day with tofu instead of ground turkey which was a new experiment for me, and I really loved it. Since I've been making the switch to vegetarian, I've been using up whats in my fridge. I made a Manhattan Fish Chowder which was pretty good. Lots of veggies, and tilapia. I'm generally not a fan of tilapia, but in this dish it tasted good.
My bf's favorite dish I make is chicken vegetable soup. I'm going to have to master a veggie soup now, because I can't eat the other anymore. My chicken soup was spicy, and full of vegetables, and delicious. :)
I love to play around with recipes as well. I look at them like guidelines, but not rules, and change them up to suit what I have in the fridge, or our tastes.
Oooo the taco bell cheesy bean and rice burrito is just about my only fast food indulgence, that and the occasional french fry order.
We go through spurts of eating at home mixed between eating out. My wife and I take turns when we're cooking. But with two kids, we do a lot of Hamburger Helper and spaghetti, mixing in a couple of more creative things every now and then.
Baggles & spiritedwildfire: Living as one-half of a flexitarian (one restrictive, one former-vegan omnivore) couple, eating at home is kind of natural for us, too. Which is not to say that there aren't tons of places that have amazing vegetarian meals...
Oftentimes, vegetarians are a little bit more aware of what they're eating, leading to more eating at home. Though, of course, the Taco Bell demon can get the best of anyone, especially late at night.
The roasted red pepper fettucini sounds so good, Baggles.

I agree that being vegetarian has lead to eating at home a lot more, I have only been one for about 9 months or so and I have had a huge change in my eating habits.
The fettucini recipe is in a cookbook at home, or I'd send it to you. Its SO good, one of my favorites ever. I'll try to think of the name of that cookbook...
I prefer cooking at home. I suck at it, but im learing, ive got the help of a great coach though ;). Its nice to go out cause it gives you a chance to change it up a bit, keep in mind you gotta try different places. Favorites are nice to go back to, but we always try to eat somewhere different. I would say thought that im not a vegan/vegetarian, but i dont have anything against one who eats that way. If i had it my way I would probably cook more. The problem though is finding good quality food that isnt gonna make you go broke. Most of the stuff is all pesticides or just general junk food that has no real food nutrition, just filler junk, but cooking at home with good quality ingredients is healthy and nicer in the end. You know who cooked it, you know that its done right, or in my case usually wrong and a little on the dry side, But its better and healthier in the long run.
