I have a 65 lb, male, adopted pit bull. I am looking at either purchasing or adopting another dog.

I am well aware that the humane society is bursting at the seams with animals that need a home.

To be honest, part of me wants a large breed, designer dog. I like Dogue de Bordeaux, Great Danes, Blue Heelers, Mastiffs, Huskies and Malamutes. Dogs of that nature.

I want something energetic that I can take out hiking with me and such. Unfortunately my current critter bolts like John Dillinger once off his leash. I also believe the new addition will be good for the mental health of my current pet.

Suggestions please.

I would check out a breed-specific rescue or a large-breed rescue group. There is are a couple of very active Husky rescue groups (they have a ton of dogs listed on PetFinder).

I wouldn't recommend a Heeler unless you have a ton of time to exercise the buhjeezus out of it. They need a lot of exercise and problem-solving activities (i.e. agility, etc.) to get out all that mental and physical energy.

Can you tell I'm a dog person?

Some how that evaded me :) I just don't want to mess with a Huskies hair. At least the Heelers hair will blend in with the pre-existing red hair from my Pit...I am still flirting with a Husky though!

The humane society does have Huskies. They had a couple when I adopted my cat. You can browse their websites and look at the animals. I found my cat by browsing their site. Its updated multiple times per day. Heelers are amazing dogs, but yes they require a ton of exercise. Malamutes and huskies also need a lot of room to run. Unless you have the space your probably better off with something like a great dane, which is a calmer dog and doesnt have the same need for space as the heeler or husky.

My dog got killed 2/7/08. I'm not ready for a new dog yet but, I would at least like to know where I can go to check some out. I know about the Humane Society and Petfinder but, that's about it. I'm looking for a medium-sized dog that gets along with everybody. Dogs can be people persons too. My dog that got killed was the best.

http://www.1-800-save-a-pet.com/ is good too--you can look for specific breeds, specific sizes, and/or just plain ol' mutts. Good stuff.

I was looking for a specific designer breed of dog that I couldn't seem to find anywhere... I got on nextdaypets.com, and found an adorable little boy that now lives with me! It was easy to use, and I found exactly what I was looking for! So maybe that will work! :)

You might find help with this on IndyPaws.com. I was looking for a good vet and it turned out to be a good resource. Good luck. Pets rock.
