I love watching movies. I always have. Sadly, I rarely have time to do it anymore now that I'm forced to work for a living.

Today, I was reminded of a movie that tops my list for the worst movie ever made.

Breakin' 2 Electric Boogaloo

To say that this movie is terrible is an travesty of the word terrible. Breakin'2 was so damn bad I'm still talking about it 23 years later.

I was 9 when this came out. You know it's bad when a movie you saw when you were 9 sucks so bad it haunts you for the rest of your life.

Need proof? (warning, you'll never get these 4 minutes of your life back)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPn4BM-EBhk

Is there anything worse than this crap? If so, please share so others are spared any unneccessary pain & suffering.

Ice-T was in that movie (I hesitate to say film) so can it really be that bad?

So many to choose from...what about worst Best Picture winner? I'd go with Titanic

I don't know about all time, but in the last 10-20 years, I'd dub "Crash" the worst best-picture winner. All four of the other nominees were highly superior to it.

I do think Worst Best Picture is easier than "Worst Film Ever Made," because films can be bad on a lot of levels, and sometimes they're bad on purpose. I'll come up with something later, though.

Crash? Seriously? I really liked that movie. I don't know if i'd say its one of my favorite, but I definitely could never say the worst. How about... When a Stranger Calls? The budget was estimated at $15 mil (imdb) and I think they got taken!

Worst 'Best Picture Winner'? That's an easy one. "Forrest Gump", which beat out "Pulp Fiction" and "The Shawshank Redemption", both of which were TEN times more watchable.

Zombieguy on Oct 24, '07 at 03:20 PM
BuckeyeBabe

I'm with Cary on this. I liked Crash. It's not the best movie ever made, but I thought it was pretty good. And I'd have voted for Shawshank Redemption too. Even though I liked Forest Gump. I don't know what the worst one is for me...maybe I just like too many movies?

BuckeyeBabe on Oct 25, '07 at 03:57 PM

I'm with Zombieguy on this.....although Forest Gump was good Pulp Fiction and The Shawshank Redemption were far superior pictures.

"Crash" may not have deserved the best-picture Oscar, but it at least had some stellar performances and left you with some interesting questions about society. For me, the worst award-winning film would be a toss up between "Shakespeare in Love" (just plain silly) and "The English Patient" (long & boring).

Annie on Oct 25, '07 at 04:45 PM

I'll go with The English Patient. The book was even worse than the movie for me.

All you "Crash" haters out there, I must disagree with you on your feelings that it was a bad film. The overall cinematography was beautiful. The story was compelling, and true, how we all seem to think we are forgiving and unbiased in our racial tendancies, but to be honest, as the movie pointed out, we all share the same hateful nature, no matter how apparent it may be. And there is a connectedness that we can't deny in this world. I think it made that statement very beautiful, but the movie in itself wasn't justifying the fact that we have these hangups, and we should just deal with them, rather, I think that it was bringing them to the surface so we must face them. It was raw and sublime all at the same time. I think best picture is more than suitable for "Crash".

stefanbean on Oct 25, '07 at 04:58 PM

Babel was pretty horrible... three uninteresting plots strung together with tiny threads does not a good film make. With 7 Academy Award nominations and starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, I expected much better. I personally liked Crash, along with other interweaving-plot films like Pulp Fiction and Go.... but if you disliked Crash, you will think Babel is unbearable.

I never said anything against crash, I just said that I thought Forest Gump was a poor choice over Shawshank, and and Pulp. I'm not sure Joe even said anything against Crash, except that he thought it was the worst of all the movies deemed the best. (which really isnt that bad, since there are TONS of horrible films out there). I agree that Crash was an Excellent Film, which is why zombieguy and I nominated Forest Gump as the worst of the best instead.

Marc on Oct 25, '07 at 05:06 PM
joe.shearer

Let me clarify a little: I don't think "Crash" is the worst movie ever made. I said I thought it was the worst of the best-picture winners over the last several years. It wasn't a horrible movie, but I hardly think it was worth a best-picture win...I think it hardly deserved a nomination.

I look at "Crash" as a slightly above-average film. It was largely cliched, and to me played out like the kind of screenplay written in a college screenwriting course. It had a couple of nice moments.

But never did I think it was the worst movie ever made. Me saying such a thing about a film starring Don Cheadle AND Terrence Howard would be a sign of the apocalypse.

What was that movie with Mariah Carey in it? Sparklers? I loved Crossroads, though. That Britney sure can act.

The Mariah Carey bomb was 'Glitter.'

The second 'Star Wars' prequel was quite horrific, at least in terms of script, acting and directing.

If you're looking for easy targets, there's 'From Justin To Kelly' and 'Dude Where's My Car?' 'Showgirls' had some dreadful dialogue.

Anything starring Freddy Prinze, Jr. should get some consideration.

Am I the only one that paid money to see Lindsey Lohan's most recent movie I Know Who Killed Me? Bad is too good a word for that movie. BUT, I'm not sure it was worse than The People Under the Stairs, or Eyes Wide Shut, or The Power Rangers Movie (yes, I saw it), or Howard the Duck, or Spice World (okay, I can't lie, I kinda liked that movie!), or any movie with a 3, 4, 5 or 6 after it. Which kinda makes me wonder why I'm even thinking about going to see Saw FOUR tonight!

I too recently saw a completely terrible movie, The Marine starring John Cena. Trust me and actually trust your natural instinct, WWE wrestlers cannot act their way out of ... well they're bad to say the least. If you don't believe me then try for yourself! I go for "Battle Beyond the Stars," the only movie I can remember actually walking out of it. It was a blatant Star Wars ripoff starring John Boy from the Waltons in a spaceship that looks exactly like a diagram of a uterus. No, really, fallopian tubes and all.

I agree that "Dirty Work" is profoundly stupid (and the jokes are poorly executed). However, it was never meant to be anything more. As a stupid comedy I strongly believe that it delivers.

I strongly doubt that the financiers of the film though, "Bob Saget directs Norm McDonald and that guy from MadTV ... hmmm, Oscar?"

The worst movie is, unquestionably, "Pearl Harbor". Honorable mentions go to the recent summer hit "Transformers" and anything Michael Bay touches.

Nathaniel_Hood on Oct 30, '07 at 02:41 PM

I dunno Nate. I think Norm was great on SNL (his Burt Reynolds on Jeopardy was obviously comedy gold) but to say Dirty Work delivers on laughs is quite a stretch.

Then again, I think Cabin Boy is hilarious, so what do I know.

Joe - As a teacher of a college screenwriting course, let me just say none of my students could come up with something like Crash. That's not selling them short -- it's just that by and large the students I deal with aren't dealing with large themes facing society so much as tiny moments and personal lives. That's not to say racism doesn't affect on a personal level or exist in tiny moments, but I'm not seeing many students go that route.

I've said this many times in many other venues, but Crash has some value as a mainstream film dealing with racism. It's a question of audience. Film buffs see it and pick it apart, but you show it to a room full of high school or college students and you can blow them away. This is in part due to experience -- a cliche is only a cliche if you've seen it before.

Many reviewers seem to note cliches or ham-handedness, which inexperienced film viewers might not see as clearly as someone who studies film all the time. Might've been Roeper who used the phrase, "This would be interesting, if you've never seen a movie like this before."Again, who is Haggis' audience? Who is he trying to reach? That, I'm not sure.

I still think the basic concept in Crash is interesting, albeit undercooked: What if everyone's racist ways were turned inside-out so that everyone else could see? Haggis brought out the ugly and made people look at it, but as far as one salient point, it's tricky.

john.king on Oct 30, '07 at 04:17 PM
Neal Taflinger

Donald Duck in Mathland blew me away when I was a kid, that doesn't mean it's a great film. Crash is an enjoyable morality play but it's not an amazing film.

Neal Taflinger on Oct 30, '07 at 04:19 PM
joe.shearer

I agree with Taffy. I don't think "Crash" is a bad film, but it was hardly deserving of the Best Picture prize.

I didn't literally mean that college students could have written the screenplay; rather, I meant that the general themes of the film are something that college students would deal with. The film deals in cliche again and again; the rich white couple who don't know much about black people; the young black man who decries racism while he willingly puts himself into every stereotype white people have about black people; and the man who just wants to work hard and raise his children (who will be put in the line of fire).

I do think it's an important film to many people, as you aptly noted it isn't a cliche if you've never seen it before. But up to the Academy's standards as to what a Best Picture is supposed to be, "Crash" surely is not.

I say that not as a critic, but just as a general movie fan (and someone who is very interested in the topic). Even my wife, who is hardly a film conissuer and has rather mainstream tastes in film, found it a bit trite.

I found it to be easily the weakest of the 5 nominated films (Good Night, and Good Luck, Brokeback Mountain, Capote, Munich and Crash)...Good Night and Brokeback were both leagues better than Crash...my feeling is that Good Night was far and away the best film of the year, but I wouldn't have been upset to see Brokeback win because it was fantastic as well. The others were just varying degrees of good to me.

Worst movie I've ever seen (in a good way, though): Dolemite. It was so bad there has to be a new category for it. Having said that, it's immenently watchable and terrifically low budget. Matter of fact, I'm putting it on Key's movie suggestions. I'd have to make it there if Ron played it.

Gnaw: Food for the Gods II has gotta be about the worst movie I've ever seen. Bad movies can be really fun to watch though, especially when you're with friends. Laughing at them and making fun of them is really entertaining. Here's the plot for this gem:

The thread that will not die!

OK, I can be tempted for only so long before I must respond.

Back when I was reviewing movies, I decided to duck into a theater on the Eastside and check out a little-publicized movie starring Dudley Moore and Peter Cook. When I paid my ticket, bought my drink and plopped myself in a seat, I noticed no one else was in the theater. About the time the trailers and concession ads should have been on the screen, the theater manager comes over and asks me if it's OK to just forget about the movie. He offered to refund my money for the ticket and drink. He also said the movie is so bad, no one has been paying to see it and that he and the projectionist want to go home early. (That's when theaters had projectionists, folks.) But I insisted the movie be screened, and they were right. The movie was a comedic version of "The Hounds of the Baskervilles," and it was appalling throughout.

I am completely with you guys on the CRASH thing...some of the awards they give out, I thought I'd misunderstood when they said Reese Witherspoon won best actress over Felicity Huffman. My vote for worst movie EVER: McHale's Navy with Tom Arnold. I was dragged there by an (now) ex-boyfriend in the late '90s. It was soooooo bad. I wanted to walk out but he insisted on staying, even though we both agreed it was horrendous. Abominable. A travesty. A hideously gruesome wreck of a movie that should never again be mentioned or referenced by anyone for the remainder of our time on this planet.

I mean, it sucked. Fortunately it did not win or get nominated for anything. Except maybe a Rotten Tomato.

Freddy Got Fingered is also really awful.
