I want to take up Martial Arts and I am looking for a good Dojo to join. Hopefully close (Speedway area) but I will take quality over connivance.
I am clearly interested only in Dojos that have adult classes available in either Tia Wan Do or Self Defense or something like that.
My job is really stressing me out and I was thinking back to the point in my life where work didn't get to me so much and at that time I was taking a Kick Boxing Class with a friend. So I think it is about time for me to get back into a physical activity and Martial arts may also help me find inner peace.
So any one know of a good Dojo?
If self defense is your primary concern I'd suggest finding a school that teaches boxing, Muay Thai, or Jiu Jitsu (or better yet, all three). Jiu Jitsu is great for women because it uses leverage to neutralize an opponent's size and weight advantage.
There are certain advantages to traditional Tae Kwon Do and Karate training, but they were aren't well-suited to modern fighting. Try Self Defense Systems or the Indiana Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy. Both are on the south side.
Tai Chi is a great alternative to heavy contact-style martial arts if you have the patience for it. Very inner-peace centric, but does teach you some applicable stances and defenses as well. Odd as it sounds (since it's such a slow moving, balance focused exercise) it's a really good work out.

Excellent advice from Neal. There's a good Kickboxing (Muay Thai) school over on the West Side at 465 and Washington.

They've got a good gym and do monthly full contact matches in a ring they setup.
You will learn everything you need to know about most Indianapolis martial arts schools by watching "The Foot Fist Way."
Then swing by the City County Bld. and get a gun permit.
