Heroes have been inspiring English language poets since at least 1010, the date of the oldest known copy of Beowulf. Our language has changed since then, and so have our heroes.
Or have they? This year, Johnson County Public Library challenges young writers to articulate their own definitions of heroism for its Fourth Annual Teen Poetry Contest. Students in grades 6 through 12 are invited to submit their poems between March 1 and March 31. First, second, and third place winners in the middle school and high school divisions will earn cash prizes.
Copies of the official entry form are available at all JCPL branches. For more information, please contact the branch nearest you: Clark Pleasant (317) 535-6206, Franklin (317) 738-2833, Trafalgar (317) 878-9560, or White River (317) 885-1330.
Got any favorite poems about heroes? I kind of like "Lincoln Monument: Washington" by Langston Hughes.
Is this open to any teen, or only those in Johnson County?
Any teen can enter, as long as he or she doesn't mind traveling to one of my branches to pick up a copy of the entry form. White River, located at 1664 Library Boulevard (near S.R. 135 and Smith Valley Rd.), is the closest to Indianapolis. Thanks for asking!
