Has anyone seen any good movies lately? I feel like all the ones I've seen have been pretty lame, or a story that's just being retold again with a few tweaks. Hollywood is pretty boring right now, I think.
I usually rent foriegn films for that reason (the Dinner Game {French} is one of my favorites). But some--I don't know. Maybe other countries have a different sense of humor? I've had quite a few bombs lately, and am getting to the point where I just want to give up watching movies all together.
I heard Juno was good? It seems like it would be a funny/heartwarming film. What are your thoughts? Seen anything else good lately or have recommendations?
Here's a few movies I like a lot: Water (Foreign) Monsoon Wedding (Foreign) Mickey Blue Eyes Dinner Game (Foreign) Airplane Oceans (All) Bourne (All) The Village Zombie films Suspense films
If you liked Monsoon Wedding, you might like Bride and Prejudice.
OK, one movie that I just thought of that I NEED to put on my list of movies that I like (this one I love) is Science of Sleep. It was crazy and weird and beautiful and strange and interesting. It was just SO different.
Unfortunately the first of the year is a bad time to look for good movies, because it's a dumping ground for the crap gets made that doesn't turn out well. You can generally expect post-Oscars until mid- to late April to generally be a bad time to go to the movies, as well as August through November or so.
So as far as going to the theaters, there's not a whole lot great out there.
You're new here, so I can give you my favorite recommendation of the past few years: "Hard Candy," if you've not seen it. It stars a pre-"Juno" Ellen Page as a teenage girl who stalks an older guy (like 30) she suspects is a pedophile. She meets him in a chat room, flirts with him, lures him to a coffee shop, then gets him to invite her back to his place and drugs him. When he wakes up, he's tied up, his pants around his ankles and an ice bag on his crotch, and she's pulling surgical tools out of her bag.
If you've not seen it, it's quite the film.
I just saw Once and I LOVED it! Its a beautiful story and it just seems so true and touching. You can almost feel the energy between the guy and the girl. Its def not at all like your average chick flick. I have the soundtrack as well and its great.
My favorite foreign film ever is Amelie, its quirky and cute and makes me feel happy.
Haha, I like Bride and Prejudice as well... so cheesey though! (In a good way) :)
And Joe, I really want to see Hard Candy! The last couple of times I've gone to my video store its been checked out. Perhaps due to your reoccuring recomendations on Indy.com??

Once is OUTSTANDING. :) Hard Candy is getting a lot of prime-time play on Showtime as well, if you're having problems getting it at your local DVD borrowing repository. :)
I'm going to look for Hard Candy. No cable tv, or satellite at my house, so I'll be borrowing it.
A film I saw and loved recently was Across The Universe. It's a musical, but not in the annoying, over the top, happy way. It's more of a psychedelic, artsy flick. Plus, I really enjoyed the songs they sang.
Also watched a documentary that I found interesting yesterday called My Kid Could Paint That. It's about a 4yr old little girl named Marla, that had her work exhibited in NY, and then the story spread globally, and her family and her came under criticism for fraud. It's interesting and explores the dynamics of the modern art world, vaguely.
I really enjoyed Juno, Ellen Paige, is a very quirky girl in the movie, and I like her character. Also love the soundtrack from it, and have it downloaded on my Zune.

Yeah!!! You've just made me really happy, because showtime is the only premium movie channel we have! Good to know, thanks!
Thanks for all the recommendations!
I really like Juno. I didn't like it at first, but it amazing how somehow throughout the story I had a change of heart and was applauding by the end (okay, and maybe wiping a tear away). I've never had a changeheart so drastic throughout a movie before.
I really like Ellen Paige, she is very talented.
My fiancee absolutely love the soundtrack too and purchased it and downloaded it on his Zune. I have to admit that it is pretty catchy.
BTW, Hard Candy was on Showtime just last night at 8:00. I watched a couple minutes of it!
