I am looking for an affordable house to rent. Preferable one that is less than $500 per month. Can anyone help me?

A HOUSE for less than $500? Good luck, even in this city where housing is cheap.

Sad but true. I live in a 850 sq ft apartment in a questionable part of town (just north of the Fairgrounds) and still pay more than $500/month. I can sympathize with wanting something out of your price range though. I'm ready to upgrade, and would love to live in a loft-style condo Downtown. I'm constantly keeping my eyes peeled for one that's less than $1,000/mo, but I don't think they exist.

If you haven't checked Craigslist or Nuvo yet, you might do that. You can filter the results by min/max rent, # of bedrooms, whether they accept pets, etc.

OR you could just scroll up to the top of your browser window and click on Apartments (indystar's Apartments link takes you to both homes and apartments for rent) and you can search by min/max rent as well!

Happy hunting!

You're not going to get anything that cheap except government-sponsored housing. Talk to HUD.

I moved here from Fort Wayne where i lived in a historical area, kind of like Fountain Square, for $350 a month including utilities. Needless to say, i was shocked when i had to pay $700 for a townhouse in BR. I want a house too but cannot afford.

check out craigslist.com, there was a house on the east side for 450.00, 2 bedroom. I don't know what the neighborhood is like but check it out!

Wow! I would have never guessed to look in the Fountain Square area. But I guess that a good locale since they're earmarked for continued renovations. Did you have an apartment or house?

BTW: Thanks for the other good comments. I really need a house though 'cause I'm sure band rehearsal in an apartment would irk the neighbors.
